History

Zeta Phi Eta was founded on October 10, 1893 at Northwestern University. Its Founders were:

  • Edith DeVore Tiffany
  • Maud Newell Wilson
  • Mollie Connor Hackney
  • Leila Little Heckler
  • Laurine Wright Bartlett

The Fraternity was incorporated on June 25, 1902 under the laws of the State of Illinois.

Still a local, in 1908 Zeta Phi Eta affiliated with Phi Eta Sigma, which was also a local organization for the field of speech arts, founded in 1901 at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. The chapter in Boston became known as the Fraternity's Alpha chapter, while the one at Northwestern took the name Beta chapter.

In 1952, Omega Upsilon fraternity disbanded, and its members affiliated into Zeta Phi Eta. Since 1950 the Fraternity broadened its focus in the speech arts, to include communications arts and sciences.[1]

Affiliations over the years have included:

Zeta Phi Eta formed a Foundation in 1955, which remains active today.[1]

In 1960 the Fraternity was approved by the Library of Congress as the first national organization to provide volunteer readers for the Library's taping program.[1]

Symbol and traditions

The Fraternity's colors are Rose and White.

The Fraternity flower is the "La France Rose".

The Fraternity badge is a rose-colored cameo upon which is carved the letter name of the Fraternity in white, surrounded by 23 pearls.

The Fraternity magazine is the Cameo, along with occasionally a Prospectus and Pledge Manual.[1]
