Upon its release, Woman to Woman received generally positive reviews from music critics, who commended its progression from Cole's previous album and the album's concept. The album debuted at number ten on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 96,000 copies in its first week. Woman to Woman also peaked at number two on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Background and development

In December 2010, Cole released her fourth studio album, titled Calling All Hearts.[2] The album debuted at number nine on the US Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 128,000 copies.[3] The album spawned two singles, "I Ain't Thru" and "Take Me Away", which both achieved lackluster success, peaking at number 54 and number 27, respectively, on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.[4][5] Following the album's release, she parted ways with her longtime manager Manny Halley and also disclosed that business disagreements played a part in their split.[6][7] On March 30, 2011, Cole announced via Twitter that she had recruited a management team in place of Halley and also revealed that she had plans to work on a follow-up album to Calling All Hearts.[8]

In September 2011, Cole confirmed via Twitter that she had begun working on her fifth studio album.[9] Cole also deemed that the album's material was different from her previous four albums and described the album as a "return to her roots" and dedicated it to "her ladies".[9][10] During the album's recording process, she told her fans that they could her "redhead Keysh" alter ego to return on the album and revealed that she planned on working with several artists such as Brandy, Boi-1da, Ester Dean and Trey Songz among others.[11][12] On August 1, 2012, Cole appeared on the BET countdown show 106 & Park and revealed that the album would be released in fall 2012, alongside her reality television series.[13][14] During the interview, she said, "I took myself out of the equation this time around and I focused on my fans, just [to] make sure that they’re gonna be happy".[13]

Recording and production

"I am trying my hardest for this album to help them get over the bull that they go through with these guys even though I’m not experiencing it at this moment. I want to be supportive and understanding and caring to my fans as well."

— Keyshia Cole, Jet.[15]

The development process of Woman to Woman took place between September 2011 and October 2012.[9][16] Cole recorded the album in sessions at the Geffen headquarters in Santa Monica and Chalice Recording Studios in Los Angeles, Westlake Recording Studios in West Hollywood, MSR Studios in New York and Cole's home studio in Cleveland.[17] The album's tracks were mastered by Chris Gehringer at Sterling Sound Studios in New York City, New York and were mixed by Jaycen Joshua, with assistance from Trehy Harris at Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles, California.[17][18]

In 2011, Cole began early stages of production, working with producers Boi-1da, Cool & Dre, Earl Powell, Toxic and Ester Dean.[10] In January 2012, record producer Sak Pasé stated that he had been working on songs with Cole.[19] In August 2012, Cole revealed that she was also working with hip hop record producers DJ Mormile and G. Roberson for the album.[20] Cole reunited with record producer Rodney Jerkins, with whom the singer had not collaborated with since her second studio album, Just like You (2007).[21][22]

For Woman to Woman, Cole enlisted the help of several songwriters including Elijah Blake and Jessy Wilson, who co-wrote several songs on the album.[23][24] Cole drew inspiration for the songs from the real-life experiences of her friends.[25] Explaining the writing process, Cole told J. Medina of Thisis50 that the album reflected around her musical growth and that she wanted to speak directly to her female audience from her point of view. She continued, "I brought songwriters on for this album and we were able to capture some moments in some of [my friends'] lives as well".[25]

Release and artwork

In October 2011, Cole announced that her fifth album would be titled Woman to Woman.[10] The title was inspired by Cole's decision to connect with her female audience through the album.[10] The album's cover artwork was taken by American photographer Derek Blanks as an alter ego photoshoot and the photoshoot took place on June 28, 2012.[17][26][27] On October 11, 2012, Cole revealed the covers for the standard and deluxe editions.[28] When asked about the album cover, Cole said: "it's literally me taking my face off. I have to for a second step outside of myself. The pain I've experienced and the things I've been through, you don't forget."[29][30] Cole expressed her excitement for the album's release and guaranteed her fans that they would like it.[31][32]

The album was first expected to be released in February 2012.[9] However, more recording and production pushed the release to November 19, comprising standard, deluxe, Target deluxe, and iTunes deluxe versions.[28][33] On October 17, the album was made available for pre-order via iTunes.[34] On November 5, Cole held an album listening party in Los Angeles, California.[35]

Just singers that can really blow but also have some things and records out right now," said Cole. "We’re working that out right now, so that could be a February–March."[57] The Woman to Woman Tour began on March 28, 2013 at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury in Westbury, New York, and ended on April 21, 2013, at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California, visiting 18 North American venues and featuring Chrisette Michele and Mateo as supporting artists.

Woman to Woman received generally positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 78, which indicates "generally favorable reviews", based on five reviews.[58] Ben Ratliff of The New York Times states, "Woman to Woman, Ms. Cole's fifth album, is an R&B almanac of shaky romance, nearly every song a first-person narrative with gnarled details, endlessly recombining data about suspicion, jealousy, pride, punishment, self-respect, the led-up, the aftermath."[1]

Mark Edward Nero of About.com rated the album 4.5 stars out of 5, labelling it as "angrily defiant" and "consistently good".[59] Allmusic’s Andy Kellman gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, stating "Although women are rarely addressed directly, Cole makes music for women dealing with a wide variety of emotionally painful romantic issues" and naming the album "among her best work."[61] Rick Florino of Artistdirect gave the album a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars: "Cole's got that timeless talent and presence that make for essential records, and that's exactly what 'Woman to Woman' is."[60] Embrace You Magazine gave a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars saying "‘‘Woman to Woman’’ reigns in maturity, depth, and solidity, and Keyshia’s voice is sounding more passionate than ever."[64] R&B website ThisIsRnB.com gave a rating of 4 out of 5 stars, stating "Back to her signature sound on emotional heavy ballads such as the new single, 'Trust and Believe', she is reminding fans why they fell in love with her back in 2005."[65] Steve Jones of nationwide magazine USA Today rated the album 3 out of 4 stars calling Cole a "feisty soul singer" whose music is "a conversation that women might actually have and that men might want to be aware of."[63]

Commercial performance

The album debuted at number ten on the Billboard 200, selling 96,000 copies in its first week in the United States to become Cole's fifth consecutive top ten album.[66] In its second week, the album dropped to number fifteen, where it sold 37,100 copies.[67] In its third week, the album fell another eleven spots to number twenty-six, selling 28,600 copies.[68][69]
