Background
Although "We Go Up" marks the first collaboration between Minaj and Fivio, Minaj made a reference to Fivio on her 2022 collaboration with fellow American rapper Lil Baby, "Do We Have a Problem?", with the lines: "Little bad foreign bitch, word to Fivio / Niggas know the vibe, that's word to Five, yo", with a 2021 Instagram post that teased the first line.[1]
In March 2022, Minaj teased "We Go Up" on the video-sharing app TikTok, in which she said that she had scrapped the song for her upcoming fifth studio album.[2] On the day of its release, she said that there was no promotion, no music video, or anything else about the song, and that it was released for her fans,[3] and not set to appear on any project.[4] "We Go Up" is a drill song.[5] It has been speculated to be inspired by New York, which was where Minaj was raised and began her career even though she was born in Trinidad and Tobago and where Fivio was born and raised.[6] Aron A. of HotNewHipHop called Fivio's "exemplary verse", which, "bouncing off Nickis energy, he comes for the crown of King Of New York" for "servicing the exhilarating production with thinly veiled threats and high energy".[7] A music video was also released.
