Wakhan District

Wakhan District is one of the 28 districts of Badakhshan Province in eastern Afghanistan. The total population for the district is about 13,000 residents. The district has three international borders: Tajikistan to the north, Pakistan to the south (specifically Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral District), and with the Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang to the east. The capital of the district is the village of Khandud, which has a population of 1,244. The district is almost entirely populated by Pamiris and, to a lesser extent, Kyrghyz.
