Story-telling Method
The story is told in two parts: 'Andru' (Then) and 'Indru' (Now). The 'Andru' portions are primarily set in the 1970s and are told in the perspective of a young Rasu who witnesses his grandmother's injustice, her subsequent death, crimes of his paternal uncle and so on. This part of the story also gives major expositions which are covered in the 'Indru' part.
The 'Indru' part deals with the main story itself, and connects several details to several other things, providing meaning and closing loopholes. The excellent writing of the show covers every plot point left behind and closes all of it by the end, including the search for the Pon Paanais, pots of stolen jewelry hidden by Pechi, Rajendran's grandmother, the story of Rasathi's brother Khasi and his quest for revenge as Varadharajan, the school teacher, and importantly, the mystery behind the identity of Karuppu Swamy.
The Riddles
Riddles play an important role as a means of exposition, such as the location of the Pon Paanais. The riddle to them was hidden in two riddles overall by the clever Pechi. One uses clever wordplay and the other has an erotic overtone designed to prevent anyone from finding its real purpose.
'பத்திரம் பத்திரம் வைரவனிடம் பத்திரம்'
(Bathiram Bathiram, Vairavanidam Bathiram)
The letter used for B in tamil can also be used as a P, as Pathiram means certificates, Bathiram means Safety and Vairavan refers to the Rice Stamper in which they are hidden.
'ஊண்மைக்கு பிரதானம்,
மைத்துனத்தின் விதானம்'
(Oonmeiku Pradhanam, Maithunathin Vidhanam.)
Pradhanam and Vidhanam both mean 'important' and refer to the word before them. In the case of the first answer, they refer to the first letter of the previous word, Oo from the first line and Mai from the second. The second answer gets a little complicated. Oonmei has two meanings, Truth and Body, while Maithunam means Copulation. To the body, Thalai (head) is important and for copulation, Anai (A hug) is important. Hence the answers are derived as Oomai Thalayanai, The Dumb Man's Pillow, referring to the rock where Asokan sleeps.
Visual Style
The series makes way for creating horror and emotion with each scene. The Andru portions are told in Black and White and usually told from someone's perspective, mainly Rajendran's. Some elements are shown in color from time to time, like fire and blood. The series has grotesque scenes like blood, bones sticking out, even a decapitated head is shown, but censored. The transition from black and white to color takes place in Episode 78, in the scene where Rajendran puts on his suit as Karuppu. The series also makes use of quick zoom effects to provide a more visceral experience. Horror elements are constantly maintained and clever camerawork is done to conceal scenes of exposition.
Auditory Style
The original score by Rehaan fits with the scenes in such a way that they provide all the meaning to the scenes. Rehaan makes use of synthesizers, string sections and occasionally, a piano. For percussion, white noise drums are used along with the Udukkai to provide rhythm to the music. The lack of music in the Andru portions makes it thrilling and visceral. The music in the Indru portions in the earlier episodes, particularly concerning scenes of Karuppu in action, make use of a raspy single male voice. The later episodes' music towards the same kind of scenes is smoother as we learn the history behind everything. A synth choir, like the one in a Mellotron-V, is often used is place or in tandem with strings. The grand-finale of the series, Episode 76 and 77, where Rasu dies after Karuppu inside him kills him, is particularly moving and uses only a male choir.
Sound Design
The overall sound design of the series is on par with modern day series as every element of ambience is captured and can be heard clearly, from the footsteps on different surfaces, squeaking doors, village ambiences to the effects for slaps, hits and slashes and dialogue mixing. The sound design is the primary element of horror besides the virtual element.
Timeline
Sithars
The proper chronological timeline according to the series starts centuries ago, when Sithars and Astrologers in the village predict what could and what will happen. This includes the demonic entity of Pecha along with Vacha and Vyacha, of which the former is dealt with by Sathyanarayana and the latter to be dealt with by Achyuthan. This also includes the path of the Pranava Prajaigal, specific people destined to be associated with the ends of Kalki avatars. In an episode, we learn that Vacha was in the form of a Zamindar in Chambal Valley, whereas the Kalki avatar was in the form of Garbara Singh, who Sathyanarayana mentioned he killed. They are also designated to be places beginning with 's' and 'ch' sounds such as Chambal Valley, Sambalpur, Sambalur and so forth. Statues of them are also depicted in the caves, along with their names below in ancient Tamil. The blood-drawing sword also has its figure in the cave, indicating that it might've been forged during that time. The inscriptions also mention the search for the Pon Paanais and its discovery and distribution by Karuppa Swamy.
1976
The Andru portions mostly happen during this time. It follows Rajendran's perspective as he witnesses the atrocities of Pechi and Kattaiyyan. This includes Pechi's death, the destruction of the Parandhaaman family, the story of Brahmman, their shift of houses from the Khasi Thopu Bungalow to a new one. It seemingly is left to be interpreted as the last episode in the timeline is set after the miscarriage of Sivagaami, when his father bans the family from ever visiting them.
1986
Only two-three episodes take place in this timeline which include Rajendran's teenage years, his bullying and the subsequent mutilation of his uncle.
1998
Most of the main events take place during this time period. This includes the solving of several old mysteries, Reena's stand against superstitions, Rajendran's prime as Karuppu, his subsequent death, Nanda's discoveries, his evolution from Doctor to a recluse and so on and so forth. It ends with the continuation of the next avatar, to be ended by Achyuthan in Ambalathittu of Kerala.
Characters
Rasu/Rajendran
The 'Andru' portions are told in his perspective, specifically events that shape him into the psychologically scarred adult he turns out to be. The violence and injustice around him manifests itself in an alternate personality, Karuppu Swamy, who believes himself as the real Karuppu and deems the upholding of justice as its main objective. Rasu is unaware of this change even during his death. The entry of Reena in his life starts to make him change and fall in love with her, although she did not reciprocate. He is unable to heed Karuppu and marry Chelli because of his love for Reena. He subsequently goes on to rape her, in the hope that the Panchayat will make them marry. When Karuppu announces death as punishment, he grows increasingly scared up to the point where euthanasia is considered. Even as a child, he was considered as Karuppu's favourite.
Karuppa Swami
The alternate persona of Rajendran that thinks of itself as indestructible and god-like. It initially manifested as the weight of Rajendran's childhood trauma compiles on him and changes him when his grandmother, Pechi, calls him Karuppu in the meaning of being black several times when trying to kill Khasi. He turns and cuts her hand and beheads her with the Aruvaal and hangs the head on the temple all the while self asserting that he is Karuppu. From then, he sees crime and injustice happening as the feeble and timid Rasu and at night or whenever required, he changes to Karuppu and kills the criminal or issues a punishment to be conducted every Full moon day. The personality thinks of Rajendran as just another person of the village. It gets extremely furious when Rajendran rapes Reena and issues a death sentence, essentially for himself. It agrees to the 3-day threshold of Reena and on the third day, searches for Rajendran. Through Nanda, it learns that Rajendran was inside himself again and stabs Rajendran(itself) with the sword and dies.
Reena
A practicing surgeon and fiction writer. Throughout the series, she investigates several things for the thrill of it alone. She initially comes to Thottakkaaramangalam to find out the reason behind Rathna's rejection of Aravind, but ends up staying in order to convince the people of superstitions and to try and reform them. Having grown up in a rich family, her father was cheated by a fake godman, thus beginning her resent towards a religion that does not allow questioning. She solves many of the mysteries surrounding the village and gets famous in the village for her notoriety. She supports Lakshmi and Shanmugam's love and feels extremely guilty when Lakshmi becomes a pregnant widow. She considers Dr. Nanda her godfather and tries to stop him from releasing his sanity but is too late.
Rathna
Rajendran's younger sister and Lakshmi's elder sister. She works alongside Reena and continuously rejects Aravind's requests for love, leading Reena to look into the cause. Her fear of Karuppu Swamy makes her question her own love of Aravind and she even forcibly convinces herself that she isn't in love with him. This ends towards the series, when Aravind gets the permission from Karuppu Swamy himself and the trauma of Rajendran changes her completely.
Dr. Nanda
Chief doctor of Reena, Rathna and Aravind. His life later turns upside down when he comes across the research of Sathyanarayana, a patient who has passed away. When he sees a sketch of himself, he becomes curious and investigates Sathyanarayana's notebook and sword, disturbing him psychologically. He relentlessly searches for answers and becomes disoriented with his normal life, becoming a recluse. He begins to have nightmares of a cave with numerous inscriptions leading him to investigate. He finds his statue in the cave and is convinced that there is a higher purpose of life for him. He finds the purpose when he discovers that he is one of the Pranava Prajaigal, people meant to transport the sword and be responsible for the end of a certain avatar at a certain place. He also finds that Karuppu Swamy is an avatar of Kalki and he has a role in the end of this avatar. True to his belief, when Rajendran as Karuppu wanders around town searching for himself, he shows him the truth in the lake water and holds the sword that is later used by Karuppu to kill himself, thus his higher role. The weight of this discovery breaks him apart and he transfers his research to Achyuthan, his successor and passes away, leaving his wife behind.
Ganapathi Ambalam
The temple's head priest and Varadharajan's brother-in-law. He helps Khasi avenge his family's death and makes plans and fake commands in order to control the family, which he succeeds in. Then, the real Karuppu takes over and bends his original plans in order to assert justice. At times, he helps people see the true meaning of things philosophically.
Velli Naachiyaar
The mother of Lakshmi, Rathna and Rajendran. She remains a firm believer of Karuppu and takes pity on Reena when everyone refuse to. She is responsible for giving the hopes of the existence of Karuppa Swamy to a young Rasu which culminated in him becoming Karuppu.
Brahmman
A former thief turned good person. He shows compassion towards the poor and helpless and eventually develops a liking towards Sivagaami. Coincidentally, Karuppu commands him to marry Sivagaami and he does so, with bliss. He is arrested later but released due to lack of evidence. He relentlessly searches for the Pon Paanais in order to receive redemption for his days as a thief. At the end, his faith is rewarded after the jewels are found.
Sivagaami
The daughter of Pechi, sister of Anaimudiyaar and Kattaiyyan. She is a wise person, seeing through potentially faulty schemes set by her brothers. She speaks cryptically, baffling Brahmman and fascinating Reena. Her friend Rasaathi becomes an unfortunate victim of her mother's plans and eventually dies, breaking her. She is tried to be married off to several people by her brother, but Karuppu decides Brahmman as her husband.
Kattaiyyan
The son of Pechi and brother to Anaimudiyaar and Sivagaami. In his prime, he is known for his notoriety around the village and his bad behaviour with women. He eventually quits his bad habits when he sees Rajendran taking the blame for one of his acts. After ten years, when he relapses, he is mutilated by Karuppu, and in the shock that none other than his own nephew is Karuppu, never speaks again until Rajendran's death. He becomes the only one who knows Karuppu and as an inscription says, is the dumb(unable to speak) man who is the only one who knows Karuppu.
Pechi/Pecha
The evil money lender of the village and mother of Anaimudiyaar, Kattaiyyan and Sivagaami. She is prophesized by ancient Sithars to be Pecha, the demonic incarnation of an evil soul who performed Penance for Kali centuries ago. The injustice in the village increases solely due to her and her death becomes the birth of Karuppu in Rajendran. Her figure haunts Nanda's dreams who is pushed to finding out about her origins. Her riddles become the talk of the town as none are able to solve it. She makes way for another great mystery by hiding the Pon Paanais, four pots filled with jewels stolen and borrowed as loan.
Aravind
Rathna and Reena's colleague and close friend. Having loved her since 2nd year of MBBS, he desperately tries to win the heart of Rathna. But Rathna places her reason as Karuppu Swamy's permission and is devastated when Karuppu Swamy does not grant her permission. So he goes to Thottakkaaramangalam himself and successfully gets the permission. He becomes Lakshmi and Shanmugam's caretaker after they get married and feels guilty over the events that led to Lakshmi becoming a widow. He also gets worried for Dr. Nanda's sanity just as Reena and even meets Sathyanarayana' wife and brings her to meet Padma, Dr. Nanda's wife.
Varadharajan/Khasi
The school teacher of the village with a mystery of his own. As Varadharajan, he arrives back in the 1970s sometime after Pechi was killed and stayed in her room until the house was haunted. He also says that he had a father and a younger sister who passed away during the Vaigai Floods, actually mirroring Rasathi and Parandhaaman, his actual father and sister who were killed by Pechi's family. Using his mother, who according to the villagers, went away after the deaths in the family, he stages the ghost story at Khasi Thopu Bungalow in the hopes that the jewels belonging to his family would be found there, but all he finds is an empty Paanai (pot). Initially, in anger, as Khasi, he puts on Karuppu's dress and rides the white horse that his father donated and kills the clerk and Mottaiyyan both of whom were responsible for his father's death. He is caught by Pechi when Rajendran intervenes and transforms to Karuppu for the first time and kills her. He makes plans with Ganapathi Ambalam, the temple's head priest to marry Sivagaami but fails. He later marries Ganapathi Ambalam's brother's daughter and has a son, Shanmugam. After Shanmugam's death and Reena's deduction, he goes back to Sri Lanka with his mother.
Lakshmi
The younger sister of Rathna and Rajendran. She falls in love with Shanmugam, Varadharajan's son and runs away with him. She later becomes a widow when Shanmugam is killed for marrying Lakshmi and betraying her for revenge, after which it is discovered that she was pregnant with his child. She attempts suicide when her father tries to make her get an abortion, feeling that she is a strain of the family.
Shanmugam
Varadharajan's son and Parandhaaman's grandson. He learns of his father's identity as Khasi from Veerabahu and plots revenge on Rajendran's family. After wooing and marrying Lakshmi, he rips her Thali (sacred thread) and leaves her with her parents. He is later killed by Karuppu which is foreseen by Nanda.
