Valentyna Rakytianska

Valentyna Rakytianska (15 October 1948 – 23 October 2021) was a Ukrainian librarian who was the director of the huge Kharkiv Korolenko State Scientific Library.

Life

Rakytianska was born in Tighina, Moldavian SSR (now Bender, under unrecogized Transnistrian control) in 1948.[1] She graduated from the Kharkiv State Institute of Culture.[2]

She was the Director of the huge Kharkiv Korolenko State Scientific Library from 1995. She had spent a long time in the library service before this including eleven years as deputy director of that library.[1]

She was able to modernise the library thanks to money from abroad including from the US Embassy.[2]

In 1999 Rakytyanska became an "Honored Worker of Culture of Ukraine"[2] and in both 1998 and 2003 she was awarded a Diploma of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration.[1]

In 2004-2005 she expanded the local library network and 27 new book collections were made available.[3]

Rakytianska died on 23 October 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.[3]
