The system consists of seven alphabetically identified services on six railway lines. Four of these services extend to reach the operational area of the Helsinki commuter rail system. Other major cities served by VR commuter rail include Tampere, Hämeenlinna, Lahti, Kouvola and Kotka.

Services

D Express train from Helsinki C to Riihimäki

The D train is a single return service operating on weekdays only. Departing towards Helsinki in the morning and returning to Riihimäki in the afternoon, it only calls at five stations on its route.

G Stopping train from Riihimäki to Lahti

The G train became a part of VR commuter rail in 2017, being promoted from a two-hourly regional connection to an hourly commuter service. All G trains call at all stations.

M Stopping train from Nokia to Toijala via Tampere C

The M train started out as a pilot in late 2019, serving Greater Tampere and the surrounding county of Pirkanmaa. The service will become a regular feature of VR commuter rail in 2022, with shorter headways and further ticketing co-operation.

O Stopping train from Kotka Port to Lahti via Kouvola

The O train was instated in 2022 when VR combined two of its remaining southern regional services into a new commuter service. Only two daily departures run through the entire route, otherwise services from either direction begin and terminate at Kouvola station. The O is a key public transport connection between the major cities of the county of Kymenlaakso, also serving as a supplemental connection for local towns and villages.

R Limited-stop train from Helsinki C to Riihimäki / on certain departures to Tampere C

The R train is the Main Line's main commuter service with a headway of 30 minutes. It mainly runs between Helsinki and Riihimäki but every two hours, a departure continues up to Tampere. Between Helsinki and Kerava, the R only calls at two major interchanges but calls at every station thereafter. The R's extended route to Tampere is the longest journey on the entire VR commuter rail network.

T Stopping train from Helsinki C to Riihimäki

The T train is an hourly night time service, calling at all stations between Helsinki and Riihimäki. It is the only regular train service in Finland to operate throughout the night on weekdays.

Z Limited-stop train from Helsinki C to Lahti / on certain departures to Kouvola

The Z train connects Helsinki and Lahti all day with hourly departures in both directions. Departures at early, peak and late hours continue up to Kouvola.

Tickets

It is worth noting that all tickets for any Finnish passenger trains must be purchased in advance. Except for Tampere commuter rail, rail transport in Finland works on a proof-of-payment system. Failing to present a proper ticket (or proof of one's right to a discount when applicable) is considered fare evasion; getting caught doing it results in a penalty fare of 80 euros acrosd the system, including in the HSL and Nysse areas.[2][3][4]

Within the VR region

Unlike the dynamic ticket pricing on VR's long-distance trains, commuter rail tickets have standard prices. The prices are determined separately for each combination of stations – alphabetical zones have been discontinued on VR commuter rail as the network has grown massively over the years. Certain discounts are available for military conscripts, alternative servants, children, pensioners and students.[5]

Within Greater Helsinki

HSL, the Helsinki regional transport authority, holds authority over issuing and inspecting tickets on all commuter trains passing through its operating region. VR tickets are necessary for journeys to and from the HSL region, whereas only HSL tickets are sold for journeys within it.[6]

Within Greater Tampere

Nysse, the Tampere regional transport authority, does not hold authority regarding trains like the HSL does but most tickets issued by Nysse are valid on the M and R trains between Nokia and Lempäälä. Alongside VR conductors, ticket inspectors employed by the city of Tampere have the right to inspect tickets on and off commuter trains, due to the fact that Nysse tickets have to be pre-validated on station platforms. VR and Nysse also collaborate in regard to the scheduling of each other's services.[7][8]

In other counties

In Kymenlaakso, VR co-operates with the cities of Kouvola and Kotka by offering a mobile ticket which is valid both on local buses and on the O and Z trains. Regular transport tickets issued in said cities are not valid on VR commuter rail, though.[9]

VR does not co-operate or collaborate with the regional transport authorities of Kanta-Häme or Päijät-Häme.
