Education

Tots Tolentino's interest in jazz was sparked at 16 years of age after hearing Charlie Parker perform on the saxophone.[4] In 1977, he enrolled at the University of the Philippines Conservatory of Music where he studied flute under Prof. Eric Barcelo. He later enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, under the tutelage of Joseph "Joe" Viola[5] where he graduated magna cum laude in 1982.[6]

Musical career

Tots began his professional musical career as a session musician for other artists until releasing his self-titled album[7] in 1990. He is acknowledged[8] as one of the first-call musicians in the Philippines since the 1990s and cited as such by the Cultural Center of the Philippines.[9]

Session Musician

Tots has worked with several big names in the Philippine music scene,[10] namely artists like Gary Valenciano, Lea Salonga, Martin Nievera, Janno Gibbs, and Mon David, to name a few. While his primary genre is jazz, his experience working with other musicians and musical artists widened his repertoire to encompass other types of music such as pop, rock, R&B, and worship.

Solo Artist

Early in his career he released three solo albums, namely the self-titled Tots Tolentino[7] in 1990 under Black Gold Records, Inah,[11] in 1991, and Color Real[12] in 1993. In 2012 he released a Christmas album called Tots Tolentino Plays Vehnee Saturno Christmas Songs[13]. In 2015, he released another Christmas album, this time under the Jesuit Communications Foundation, called God Rest Ye! (Christmas Jazz with Tots Tolentino).[14]

Bands

In the 90s, he fronted the group Buhay,[15][16] a band composed of Pinoy jazz veterans Wowee Posadas (keyboards), Mar Dizon[17] (drums), Meong Pacana (bass), and Tots Tolentino. Buhay toured Asia, Europe, and the U.S. spreading the love for Pinoy jazz.[18]

In the mid-1990s Tots was in invited by Asia's premier jazzman, Terumasa Hino[19] to join the Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet,[20][21] a jazz group composed of four of Asia's leading jazz musicians. The frontman of the group is pianist/organist Jeremy Monteiro from Singapore. Other members include guitarist Eugene Pao from Hong Kong, drummer Hong Chanutr Techatana-nan[22] from Thailand, and Tots Tolentino on saxophone.

Tots joined Johnny Alegre AFFINITY in 2002, a Manila-based jazz group that includes frontman Johnny Alegre (guitar), Colby de la Calzada (double bass and bass guitar), Elhmir Saison (piano), and Koko Bermejo (drums). Johnny Alegre AFFINITY has recorded several albums and won several awards.

Tots was one of the founders and main performers/soloists of a large jazz ensemble called The AMP Band,[23] composed of several members of the organization created for Filipino musicians called the Asosasyon ng Musikong Pilipino,[24][25] hence its name. The AMP Band performs at various events and venues such as bars/clubs, hotels, and private functions. It is greatly sought after by local celebrities and often invited to perform with them at shows, guestings, and concerts.

Collaborations

Tots collaborated with other musicians in project bands. The ETS Band, an acronym for the names of the principal members of the band, is composed of Elhmir Saison (keyboards), Tots Tolentino (clarinet), Janno Queyquep (guitar), Noel Asistores (bass), Mar Dizon (drums), and Wilson Matias (2nd keyboards).

Monk's Jazz Bureau, a group that gets its name from the great American jazz pianist, Thelonious Monk - composed of Terry Undag (trumpet), Tots Tolentino (alto sax), Marc Lopez (piano), Colby dela Calzada (bass), and George San Jose (drums).

The Bobby Enriquez All-Star Band - composed of Bobby Enriquez (piano), Emil Mijares (vibraphone), Nestor Gonzaga (trumpet), Abel Valdevia (alto sax), Tots Tolentino (tenor sax), Pikoy Villapando (baritone sax), Narding Sanchez (trombone), Roger Herrera (bass), Tony Velarde (drums), and Nick Boogie (percussion).

Advocacy

His passion for music and specifically Filipino music, and concern for the plight of musicians drove him to meet with like-minded individuals. Together they formed the organization called the Asosasyon ng Musikong Pilipino (Association of Filipino Musicians).[24] This organization strives to professionalize Filipino musicians and provide benefits such as proper wages, standardized contracts, financial assistance, legal counsel, and coordination with government agencies (such as the National Commission on Culture and the Arts and the Cultural Center of the Philippines).

Mentor and Educator

The Filipino Music Art Collective[26] has Tots listed as one of their mentors for improvisation. Years before, Tots had already started mentoring old and new musicians from basic lessons such as music theory to musicality and musical expression. A few years ago, Tots joined the faculty of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music (UST Music).[27] At present he is the head of the Jazz Studies program[28] and the conductor of the UST Jazz Ensemble.[29][30]
