Thuwunna Stadium

Thuwunna Stadium (Burmese: သုဝဏ္ဏ လူငယ် လေ့ကျင့်ရေး ကွင်း) is a multi-use stadium complex, located in Yangon, Myanmar. The 32,000-seat stadium is smaller but more up-to-date than the Aung San Stadium. It's the venue of choice for most national and international level football and track and field competitions. The Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium is part of the same complex.

Overview

The stadium's eight-lane runway is the first in Myanmar that conforms to the international (IAAF) standards.

From June 23 to July 3, 2012, the stadium hosted 2013 AFC U-22 Asian Cup qualification Group G matches.

The stadium hosted South East Asian Game 2013 Southeast Asian Games Football matches from 11 December 2013 to 22 December 2013.

The stadium hosted the qualification stage for the 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup and it was hosted 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup Group B matches from 19 November – 17 December 2016.

History

The stadium was donated by Japan in the 1980s as Youth Training Center.It was only used for training by young people but later it hosted international events. The west stand, VIP Stand, has a roof, while the rest of the stands have no roof and are one tiered stands.[2]

The stadium has undergone a major renovation to host football matches in 27th Southeast Asian Games, 2013.It was extended to the same level as the west stand. In the original design, it was planned to have a full roof, but only the east stands were roofed.[3]

It still hosts most of the matches of the Myanmar national football teams and is still an important stadium in Yangon.Near the stadium, National Indoor Stadium (1), Futsal Stadium, Training Stadiums, Sport Federations and Football Academy are located.[4]
