This Is A Trent Reznor Song

"This Is A Trent Reznor Song" is a 2014 parody song by American humorist Freddy Scott, about the stylistic elements used by Trent Reznor (of whom Scott has said he is a "huge fan", and whose work Scott has described as "absolutely brilliant"); the tune is inspired by Reznor's 2014 song "Copy of a".[1]

Reception

Spin described the song as "reductive, unfair, and more than a little silly," but also "priceless" for its accuracy in mimicking Reznor.[2] Entertainment Weekly praised it as a "spot-on homage" and "pretty hilarious".[3] At Stereogum, Tom Breihan called it "great" and "something (he)'d listen to [even] if it didn’t have joke lyrics", but considered the song's value as a parody to be lessened by the fact that the stylistic elements Scott chose to emphasize were common in Reznor's earlier work but not his more recent albums.[4]

Video

In March 2014, Scott released a music video of the song, inspired by elements from the videos for Reznor's songs "Closer", "The Hand That Feeds", and "We're in This Together".[1] Entertainment Weekly considered it "a little more outwardly funny than the song itself" while still showing "reverence for Reznor's work".[5], and Consequence of Sound stated that it was "every bit as amazingly and amusingly on-point" as the song.[6] Stereogum, however, found that the "jokes-per-minute ratio could be higher", while noting the success of the jokes that are present (and particularly lauding the use of a box labeled "Weird Sound").[7]
