The 2012 mobile game is entitled "The Sandbox" because it provides users with tools to create their own nonlinear gameplay, commonly known as a "sandbox mode". The player takes the role of "Deity apprentice" and sets about crafting their own universe through the exploration of resources such as water, soil, lightning, lava, sand, glass, and many more complex elements such as humans, wildlife, and mechanical contraptions. Players encounter tasks like using water and dirt to make mud, and challenges like making a battery or building an electrical circuit. Players can save worlds they have created and also upload them to a public gallery.

The property was acquired by Animoca Brands in August 2018 to use for a Voxel-style blockchain version of the game. This would then facilitate users monetizing their in-game creations.[2] Users can buy plots of virtual land, with promotional partners owning land including Snoop Dogg, Richie Hawtin, Deadmau5 and The Smurfs.[3] In May 2019, Animoca raised $2.5 million in funding for the development of this project.[4]
In Q3/2019 Square Enix, B Cryptos, and True Global Ventures invested $2.01 million in cash and cryptocurrency in The Sandbox.[5] In November 2021 SoftBank led a $93 million investment in The Sandbox.[6] In November 2021 Adrian Cheng announced that he will build virtual land in The Sandbox’s metaverse.[7] In April 2022 The Sandbox announced a raise of $400 million at a valuation of more than $4 billion.[8]
The alpha of The Sandbox Metaverse was launched on November 29 2021.[9]
