The Nutrition Society

The Nutrition Society is a main scientific learned society in the field of nutritional science, headquartered in London.

History

It was founded in 1941. On Tuesday 14 October 1941, a founding meeting was held at the Royal Institution.[1] The Society was formed to coordinate research into nutrition for the Second World War, much of which was being led by Sir John Orr, who became chairman. Its first discussion meeting was held in Cambridge on Saturday 18 October 1941.

In April 1943, an oversight Advisory Committee on Nutrition Surveys was set up, overseen by Sir Joseph Barcroft, and supported by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Food.[2][3] Although some research on nutrition and health had been conducted, it was increasingly felt by government and the Society that any overall oversight or tracking of these individual collections of research had not been present enough. Dissemination of up-to-date knowledge was not sufficient across each research group, and different incompatible methods had been conducted by each research group. This situation had been found by a similar committee set up by the MRC to look at how research was being conducted into haemoglobin. The committee would look at research about the chemical content of food, communal eating, and food budgets. The committee would be directed by John Marrack at the London Hospital.

In 1993, a database was set up, with the Institute of Biology, of registered nutritionists.[4] The register for nutritionists was divested as the Association for Nutrition.

Function

It produces the British Journal of Nutrition and the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. It holds symposiums on nutrition.

The International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS) is headquartered in the same building, and is operated by The Nutrition Society.

Structure

It was incorporated as a company in August 1976.[5]

It covers the Republic of Ireland as well.
