Saybil is called to the office of the magic academy's headmaster, Albus. After witnessing a fight between a tiny girl named Loux Krystas and the wolfman Holden, Albus lets everyone into her room. Albus announces that she's giving Saybil a chance to redeem his low scores by completing a mission to the south of the continent to establish peaceful relations between mages and other humans. Loux then reveals she has forcibly substituted herself as Saybil's escort, in exchange for the chance to read the Grimoire of Zero. Despite her anger at Loux, Albus offers to let Loux meet Zero herself if she escorts Saybil on this mission. The next day, Loux, Saybil, and top student Holt meet in town and Loux talks about her "witch-eater" staff called Ludens. The three then head south via carriage, but Saybil gets carsick and the trio are forced to make a quick stop, where Saybil tells Holt about his difficulty controlling his magic, and fears of being left an empty shell if he fails this mission. Eventually they reach the inn by the next morning. While eating breakfast, they find two other students who were being escorted by the lizardman Kudo who they claim abandoned them to bandits. Loux deduces from their condition that Kudo found some witch hunters were coming after them and protected them by making himself the target. Loux decides to rescue Kudo herself and orders the others to stay at the inn. However, Saybil and Holt decide to magically scry Loux's location and set off to rejoin her. While tracking her location through the woods, they come across signs of battle and a severed lizard tail. | |||||
