The Clan Pt. 1 Lost

The Clan Pt. 1 Lost (also stylized as The Clan Pt. 1 'LOST') is the third extended play by the South Korean boy group Monsta X and the first part of The Clan trilogy series. It was released on May 18, 2016 by Starship Entertainment and distributed by LOEN Entertainment. It also contains six songs, including the singles "Ex Girl", "All In", and "Stuck".

Background and release

In April 2016, the group announced that they will be releasing a 2.5 episodes or trilogy series called The Clan, revealing the first concept as Part 1: LOST.[1] A pre-released track "Ex Girl" featuring Mamamoo's Wheein was released on May 9. It is described as a mellow pop R&B track, describing a man's regret about the one who got away.[2][3] The lead single "All In" was released on May 18. It is a hip hop track that highlights the group's signature powerful sound and move; it also features a thumping beat and furious raps.[4][5]

The music video for the lead single was released on Starship's and 1theK's official YouTube channels on the same day. It was also directed by the award-winning film director Dee Shin.[6][7]

The group held their comeback showcase on May 18 at Yes24 Live Hall in Seoul and was streamed live on Naver's V App.[4][8]

The EP was released in two versions; Found and Lost.

Critical reception

Taylor Glasby, writing for Dazed described the music video of the lead single "All In" as ambitious and provocative, "but the video almost backseats the song to a soundtrack", which Glasby describes as "far better than the MV gives it the chance to be with a 'crooning chorus'".[9] The EP is described by KultScene as "a rather safe enterprise for the group", but that the combination of the seven songs still is strong enough that it places in their "Best Korean Albums of 2016" list, describing "All In" as "magnum opus material".[10] In particular, "All In" was noted as combining "much of the noisy ambitions and fighter attitude" of Monsta X's earlier works with "the song's sublimely melodic undertones" so that "under all the polyphony is a delightful gem".[11]
