The film is attributable to the trend of sentimental melodramas, commonly called tearjerking (later renamed appendix neorealism by critics), which had been very successful in the years after the second postwar period (1945-1955) among the Italian public, but which at the time of the release of the film had entered its decadent phase.[2]
