Talish, Tartar

Talish (Azerbaijani: Talış, listen ; Armenian: Թալիշ) is a village in the Tartar District in Azerbaijan, in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. The village had an ethnic Armenian-majority population prior to the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, and also had an Armenian majority in 1989.[3]

History

During the Soviet period, the village was part of the Mardakert District of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, which existed from 7 July 7, 1923 until 26 November 1991. During the course of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the side controlling the village has changed on numerous occasions.

During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, the village last changed hands when the village recaptured by Armenian forces from the Azerbaijani side on 11 April 1994, leaving the village as part of the Martakert Province of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh following the war.[4] The village had 581 inhabitants in 2005.[5]

During the 2016 Armenian-Azerbaijani clashes, the village was severely damaged and was temporarily captured by Azerbaijan's armed forces after most of its population had been evacuated, but was recaptured by Armenian forces before the end of the clashes.[6] Following the 2016 clashes, Azerbaijan claimed to have regained control over all the heights around the village.[7] However, Armenia claimed that Azerbaijan had gained control over some military posts, but did not succeed in capturing all the heights around the village.[8][9]

The Armenian-majority village was captured by Azerbaijani forces during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war.[10][11][12]
