Early coaching career
Lutz started his coaching career with stops at UIW, Garden City CC, Stephen F. Austin and SMU.[1] During his time at UIW his teams went 99-20. At Garden City Lutz coached under longtime Division one coach Jeremy Cox. In six seasons at Stephen F. Austin, the Lumberjacks went 93-76, including a 71-44 mark his final four years.[2] During his time at SMU, Lutz served as the recruiting coordinator for the Mustangs. His first two recruiting classes were ranked in the top-35 nationally by Hoop Scoop Online. In his fourth season, SMU finished with its most wins.[3]
Creighton
At Creighton, Lutz developed a reputation as one of the nation's top recruiters and was instrumental in the development of 2014 National Player of the Year Doug McDermott, son of Creighton's head coach.[4]
Purdue
At Purdue, Lutz helped develop Purdue into a top defensive team, including an 11th national ranked defense in efficiency. [5]
Texas A&M Corpus Christi
On April 6, 2021, Lutz was named head coach of the Texas A&M–Corpus Christi Islanders men's basketball program, taking over for Willis Wilson who retired.[6]
