Steuart Pittman, Jr.

Steuart L. Pittman, Jr. (born September 11, 1961) is a Democratic politician, farmer, and horse trainer in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. He is the 10th County Executive of Anne Arundel County.[1]

Early life and education

Pittman was born and raised on his family's farm, Dodon farm, in Davidsonville, Maryland. He attended the University of Chicago, graduating with B.A. in Political Science & Latin American Studies in 1985.[2]

Career

Steuart Pittman, Jr. has served as County Executive of Anne Arundel County, Maryland since December 3, 2018. He began his career as a field director for the National Low Income Housing Coalition in 1990. He later became the Director for National Campaigns for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). Prior to that he was a community organizer in Chicago from 1984 to 1986 and in Iowa from 1986 to 1990.[1]

Pittman is a horse trainer and farmer on his family's farm in Davidsonville, Maryland. He owns the Dodon Farm Training Center, where he has worked since 1994. Pittman is the founder and executive director of the Retired Racehorse Project, which he began in 2010.[3] He was the president of the Maryland Horse Council from 2009 to 2013.[1]

Boards and Commissions

Pittman is a member of the Board of Directors, Baltimore Metropolitan Council since 2018.[4] He serves on the Board of Visitors of the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical System since 2018. Pittman was a member of the State Commission on the Capital City from 2018 through 2019 and is currently serving on the Central Maryland Regional Transit Plan Commission, which he joined in 2018. Pittman also serves on the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board which he joined in 2018 and was the organization's vice-chair from 2020 through 2021.[1]

Steuart Pittman served on the Anne Arundel County Gun Violence Prevention Task Force from 2019 to 2020.[1]

Pittman has been a member of the Maryland Agricultural Certainty Oversight Committee since 2013. He also sits on the Board of Supervisors, Anne Arundel County Soil Conservation District.[1]

Pittman has served on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Association of Counties from 2019. In 2020 he was a Delegate to the Democratic Party National Convention. Pittman also served on the board of directors for the Anne Arundel County Farm Bureau (member, county issues committee).[1]

As County Executive

Pittman was elected County Executive on November 6, 2018, and took office on December 3, 2018.

Pittman endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for president on April 26, 2020.[17] Pittman endorsed Wes Moore for Governor of Maryland on September 8, 2021.[18]

Personal life

Pittman lives with his wife on Dodon farm. His sister operates a winery on the property; Pittman has no stake in the winery.[19][20][21] He started the Retired Racehorse Project in 2010 and is an avid horseman.[3][22]
