The school was opened in 1900.[6] From 1900 to 2020, it was a voluntary aided school administered by Bury Metropolitan Borough Council. In November 2020, the school converted to academy status and is now sponsored by the St Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Academy Trust.[7]

The school's eight form classes are named after Lancashire saints and consist of Arrowsmith, Lyne, Southworth, Ward, Barlow, Clitheroe, Plessington and Rigby.[5]

Forms Mayne and Jones were no longer used for new years starting in 2019, and both were dissolved school-wide in 2020. The students previously in the forms were moved to other forms.

The school previously had a publication, Pronuntio (lit. I pronounce in Latin), however, it is now defunct as of December 2019.[8]
