Southern League Most Valuable Player Award

The Southern League Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) is an annual award given to the best player in Minor League Baseball's Southern League (SL) based on their regular season performance. The award was created in 1972,[1] eight years after the league was established in 1964.[2] After the cancellation of the 2020 season,[3] the league was known as the Double-A South in 2021 before reverting to the Southern League name in 2022.[4][5]

Twenty-one outfielders have won the MVP Award, the most of any position. First basemen, with 13 winners, have won the most among infielders, followed by third basemen (4) and second basemen and shortstops (2). Seven catchers also won the award. One player who won the award has been a designated hitter.

Five players from the Huntsville Stars and Knoxville Smokies/Sox/Tennessee Smokies have selected for the MVP Award, more than any other teams in the league, followed by the Carolina Mudcats, Columbus Astros/Mudcats, Memphis Chicks, and Montgomery Biscuits (4); the Birmingham Barons, Chattanooga Lookouts, Jacksonville Expos/Suns, and West Tenn Diamond Jaxx/Jackson Generals (3); the Greenville Braves, Mobile BayBears, and Nashville Sounds (2); and the Asheville Tourists, Biloxi Shuckers, Charlotte O's, Mississippi Braves, Montgomery Rebels, and Orlando Twins (1).

Six players from the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball (MLB) organization have won the MVP Award, more than any other, followed by the Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Devil Rays/Rays organizations (4); the Arizona Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Oakland Athletics organizations (3); the Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins, Montreal Expos, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Toronto Blue Jays organizations (2); and the Chicago Cubs, Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners organizations (1).

Winners
Andrés Galarraga, the 1984 SL MVP, went on to become a five-time MLB All-Star.[6]
Jose Canseco, the 1985 SL MVP, won the American League Rookie of the Year Award in 1986 and the American League MVP Award in 1988.[7]
Gabe Kapler, the 1998 SL MVP, went on to play MLB and to manage in MLB, winning the 2021 NL Manager of the Year Award.
Evan Longoria, the 2007 SL MVP, went on to win the 2008 American League Rookie of the Year Award.[8]
Joey Votto, the 2006 SL MVP, won the National League MVP Award in 2010.[9]
