History

1970s and 1980s
Hess's South, an early satellite location of the Hess's downtown Allentown department store, opened at the site of the mall in 1971.[2] Hess’s built a modest enclosed mall on the north side of the department store in 1975, adding a Weis Markets location and several specialty shops.[2]
In 1979, the Hess's chain, which developed and owned the mall and operated its largest tenant, was bought by a Johnstown-based mall developing firm, Crown American, and the transaction included South Mall, which had been owned by Hess's.[3] Crown American]doubled the size of the South Mall in a 1986-1987 expansion that added a new section of enclosed mall on the southern side of Hess's South.[2] Discount retailer Jamesway opened its 100th store at the South Mall to anchor the new expansion, and celebrated the milestone with skydivers landing on the parking lot.[4] The mall expanded yet again in 1991, adding discount drugstore Phar-Mor as its third major anchor in the newer portion of the mall.[5]
1990s
The older portion of the mall on the north side of Hess's was de-malled sometime following the 1991 closure of the Rea & Derick drugstore due to its acquisition by CVS.[6] The former mall space in this area was replaced by Staples and Petco by 1996.
Jamesway closed in late 1995 as the whole chain folded during its second bankruptcy filing.[7] A year later, a majority of the Jamesway space was occupied by Stein Mart, marking Stein Mart's first Pennsylvania location.[7] The remainder of the former Jamesway was subdivided between Gold's Gym and Home & Gifts, before later becoming a Ross Store.[8]
Weis closed its South Mall food market amid poor sales in 1999.[9] The former grocery store has since been subdivided into a strip of several stores.
2000s
Phar-Mor closed its anchor store at the South Mall in 2002 as part of the chain's national closure.[10] This was replaced by Steve & Barry's, a retail clothing chain.
In 2003, mall owner Crown American was purchased by the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PREIT).[11]
Steve & Barry's went bankrupt and closed all stores in 2008.[12] The anchor space it had occupied at South Mall was leased the following year to Black Rose Antiques and Collectibles, an antique mini-mall that featured over 100 individual dealers selling various curios.[13]
2010s
In June 2014, PREIT sold the mall for $23.6 million to Nicholas Park Mall LLC, a company formed by 7 New York area investors led by former Macy's executive Richard Krantz.[14] This was one of more than a dozen underperforming malls that PREIT has sold since 2012 in order to focus on its most successful properties.[15]
In fall 2016, Yocco's Hot Dogs, a regionally famous hotdog and cheesesteak restaurant chain, opened its sixth Lehigh Valley restaurant in South Mall.[16][17]
On January 1, 2017, Black Rose Antiques moved from South Mall to Phillipsburg Mall in Philipsburg, New Jersey.[18] The anchor space Black Rose Antiques previously occupied in the South Mall was the subdivided with Limerick Furniture occupying the larger share of the space in early 2017.[19] The remainder of the space was revamped to accommodate Full Circle Training, a gymnasium that opened in early 2018.[20]
In 2018, The Bon-Ton, the oldest and largest anchor of the South Mall, closed all of its national store locations, including its South Mall location.[21] In 2019, Limerick Furniture closed as well, leaving the mall with just Stein Mart, a men's and women's clothing store, as its sole remaining major anchor tenant.[22]
2020s
In 2020, the last anchor of the mall, Stein Mart announced it would be closing all stores. In addition 2 stores have been added replacing former store spaces.
On February 10, 2021, Amazon Lockers and Salisbury Youth Association opened South Mall stores, replacing the former FootLocker
On April 1st, 2021, the franchised T-Mobile store near the mall entrance closed up permanently. The corporate store across from this former T-Mobile and the Metro by T-Mobile, however, remain open. Another store, called Uniquely Lo. Co., has opened a South Mall store.
On May 26th, 2021, the Claire’s store closed its South Mall location.
In recent years, the South Mall has shifted focus towards engaging community events including periodic flea markets and weekly summer food truck events. Nontraditional tenants, such as Cave Brewing Co., a full-service craft beer bar with live entertainment, and the South Mall Mercantile antiques dealer, have been brought in to fill the voids left by more traditional mall retailers.
