Season chronology

It was originally set to premiere in the summer of 2020, the initial judging panel was to be series creator Nigel Lythgoe (on would be his seventeenth consecutive season as judge), Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson, but it was postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] Cat Deeley will return her role as host for a sixteenth consecutive season. This season's judging panel will be entirely different from previous seasons despite the production postponement, with the return of freestyle hip-hop dancer and Season 4 runner-up Stephen "tWitch" Boss. New to the judging panel is dancer and reality TV star JoJo Siwa and actor Matthew Morrison, who will serve as the second and third judges during the auditions and the live shows. These judges will replace Lythgoe, Murphy and Gibson.[3]

In addition to the new judges, the auditions have been revamped so instead of remote tryouts, the contestants come to the new SYTYCD Hollywood studio, outfitted with 120 cameras surrounding the stage, allowing the movement to be “frozen” in time.

Auditions

Initial auditions, for dancers ages 18 to 30, were due to begin in March 2020 but were postponed amid in the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic. Auditions would likely be continued for this season during the delay. Those who were originally submitted in 2020 and could be getting an extended age limit to 32. Production was rescheduled for March 2022 including the start of auditions.[4]
