In 2008, Gomez first signed to Hollywood Records.[8] Gomez made her chart debut on the US Hot 100 with "Tell Me Something I Don't Know", a single from the Another Cinderella Story soundtrack (2009).[7] With her former band Selena Gomez & the Scene, she released three top-ten studio albums, Kiss & Tell (2009), A Year Without Rain (2010) and When the Sun Goes Down (2011), on the US Billboard 200 chart.[9] Gomez released her first solo album, Stars Dance (2013), which debuted atop the US Billboard 200 chart,[10] and also reached number one in Canada.[11] It was preceded by the release of its lead single, "Come & Get It", which reached the top ten in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.[7][12][13] Having spent seven years with Hollywood Records, Gomez signed a recording contract with Interscope Records in 2014.[14] To officially end her contract with Hollywood Records, Gomez released the compilation album For You (2014). Its lead and only single, "The Heart Wants What It Wants", went on to become her second top-ten single in the US.[7]

Gomez's second studio album, Revival (2015), debuted at number one in the US,[15] and spawned the international top-ten singles "Good for You", "Same Old Love" and "Hands to Myself".[7] With these three singles, Gomez becomes the sixth woman to score at least three number-one singles on the Mainstream Top 40 chart from a single set.[16] Since then, she was featured on several collaborations, including "We Don't Talk Anymore", "It Ain't Me", "Wolves" and "Taki Taki", which all achieved international success and reached top-ten in several territories worldwide. Between 2011 and 2018, Gomez had a streak of 16 consecutive top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, which is the longest active run of any artist, beginning with "Love You Like a Love Song", a release with The Scene.[17] In January 2020, Gomez released her third studio album, Rare, her first album since 2015. The album reached the number-one spot on the Billboard 200, giving Gomez her third consecutive number one album;[18] and also topped the charts in Australia and Canada.[19][11] It also debuted at number two in the UK, becoming her highest-charting album in the country.[13] Its lead single, "Lose You to Love Me", was an international hit and reached the top ten of various national charts worldwide. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming her first number-one song in the US;[20] and also her first number one in Canada.[12]

Gomez's first Spanish-language project, an EP titled Revelación (2021), debuted at number one on the US Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, becoming the biggest week for a Latin album by a woman since 2017.[21] It was also the highest debut by a female solo act since 2016 and the first album by a woman at number one since 2017 on the US Latin Albums chart.[21] With this EP and the single "Baila Conmigo", Gomez became the first female act to lead the US Latin Albums and Latin Airplay charts simultaneously in over a decade.[21]
