Sam Ryder (singer)

Sam Ryder (born 25 June 1989)[1] is a British singer and social media personality from Maldon, England. He is scheduled to represent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with the song "Space Man".[2][3][4]

Early life

Ryder attended St John Payne Catholic School in Chelmsford, Essex between 2000 and 2007.

Career

Ryder began working in the music industry as a singer and guitarist in 2009, working as a session player for the groups The Morning After, Blessed by a Broken Heart and Close Your Eyes.[5][6] Ryder rose to prominence through to TikTok, where, starting with the first lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, he started posting music covers. By the end of the same year, he became the most-followed UK artist on the platform.[7] He later signed a record contract with Parlophone and with the management agency TaP Music. In 2021, Ryder released his debut EP, The Sun’s Gonna Rise, which has received over a 100 million global streams. It was followed up with a sold-out tour.[8]

On 10 March 2022, the BBC had internally selected Ryder as the UK representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 with the song "Space Man".[9] Between March and May of 2022, Ryder embarked on a promo tour throughout Europe.[10] He will support Paloma Faith, during her summer concert in Hatfield Park.[11]
