Salah Zulfikar filmography

Salah Zulfikar (1926-1993) was an Egyptian actor and film producer,[1] who appeared in over 100 feature films, several short films, stage, TV series and Radio series. Zulfikar‘s film debut was in 1956 in a leading role becoming one of the most dominant leading men in Egyptian cinema. He starred in action, crime, war, drama, horror and romantic comedies. [2]

Salah Zulfikar’s film debut was in Wakeful Eyes (1956) alongside Shadia. He played the role of Ahmed the playboy in Mahmoud Zulfikar’s Forbidden Women (1959) alongside Huda Sultan, and Ezz El-Dine Zulficar’s Among the Ruins alongside Faten Hamama and Emad Hamdy in 1959.

The following year, Zulfikar starred in Niazi Mostafa’s Earning (1960), his next role was in A Secret of a Woman of Atef Salem alongside Huda Sultan and Emad Hamdy. He starred in I accuse of Hassan El-Imam, a thriller, alongside Zubaida Tharwat playing the role of Salah the journalist. He starred in Sacred Bond (1960) of Mahmoud Zulfikar earning him critical recognition from Cairo critics.

One of his six films of 1961 was the war drama; Path of Heroes, starring alongside Hind Rostom and Shoukry Sarhan as a military officer. His next role was in the romance; Wahida (1961) alongside Mariam Fakhr Eddine.[3][4] The following years, Salah Zulfikar achieved success all over the Middle East through multiple film genres including the horror box office hit; The Cursed Palace (1962). His following role was Salem the police officer in Ahmed Diaa Eddine’s All my Sons (1962) alongside Shoukry Sarhan and Hassan Youssef and Amina Rizk. He starred in A Husband on Holiday (1964) achieving box office success.[5] He starred as a gold thief in Three Thieves (1966). He appeared in Three Women (1968) alongside leading actresses Sabah, Huda Sultan and Mervat Amin. His next role was Yehia in Youssef Chahine’s The Nile and the Life (1968). [6] Zulfikar starred in the light comedy; Women’s Market (1969) alongside Mariam Fakh Eddine.

His next role was in Virgo (1970), a box office hit co-starred by Nahed Sherif and Adel Emam. His next film was the thriller; Eye of Life (1970) achieving good numbers in the box office. He starred in Mahmoud Zulfikar’s My Husband’s Wife (1970) co-starring Naglaa Fathi and Nelly. In the next year, Zulfikar starred in Helmy Rafla’s A Touch of Tenderness (1971), a romance alongside Shadia. Next film was in Confessions of A Woman (1971) alongside Nadia Lutfi and Kamal El-Shennawi.[7] [8] In his six films of 1972, Zulfikar played diversified roles including Mohsen in A Call for Life (1972) co-starring Mervat Amin and Mahmoud El-Meliguy. He starred in Incomplete Crime (1972) a crime thriller co-starred by Isaad Younis in her film debut. The following year, Zulfikar starred in the Syrian romance; Memory of A Night of Love (1973) alongside leading actresses Nelly, Muna Wassef, Nabila Ebeid and Hala Shawkat. He appeared in a guest appearance in Enemy Brothers (1974) playing the role of the public prosecutor. Zulfikar appeared in the political film Karnak (1975) of Ali Badrakhan in a special appearance alongside Soad Hosny, playing the role of the rebellious member of parliament Shoukry, earning him critical recognition.

Zulfikar appeared in a guest appearance in A World of Children (1976). Passing a year, he starred in the thriller, Traveller Without A Road (1978) a box office hit alongside Mahmoud Yassin and Magda El Khatib. His next role was Abdel Ghaffar Lotfy in Moment of Weakness (1981), and it was a complex character earning him critical recognition co-starred by Hussein Fahmy and Nelly.

Zulfikar starred as a famous writer in Anis Mansour’s novel adaptation Sorry for Bothering in (1986). He played Fadel Abu Al-Fadl; the wealthy man who spent almost everything he owned to build a huge villa and own a sports car in The Barefoot Millionaire (1987). The following year, Zulfikar starred in six films including Love Also Dies (1988), a romance co-starred by Safia El Emari and Ezzat El Alaili. His box office hit; Days of Terror (1988) was a commercial comeback for Zulfikar alongside Mahmoud Yassin and Mervat Amin. He starred in Unfortunately Woman (1988), alongside Yousra.

In the next year, Zulfikar starred in the comedy; Mr. Aliwa’s Apartment (1989). In 1990, he starred in Mr. Shalash's Family, the TV miniseries and it was a success. Zulfikar appeared in a cameo appearance as himself in Alexandria Again and Forever (1990) of Youssef Chahine. Zulfikar's films in his later years included Henry Barakat‘s Wicked Game (1991), a box office hit co-starred by Athar El-Hakim, and Henry Barakat’s The Accused (1992), Minister in Plaster (1993) and his next role was in Five-Star Thieves of Ashraf Fahmy and Nader Galal’s The Terrorist (Al Irhabi) which were released in 1994.

Zulfikar participated in over 250 artistic projects either cinematic, TV, Radio or Stage. He was a film producer and film, stage, TV and radio actor.[9]

Zulfikar’s film production career started in 1958, when he started a partnership with elder brother Ezz El-Dine Zulficar working as Executive director for years before running the company after his brother’s death in 1963. He produced fourteen feature films, his prominent productions included Among the Ruins (1959), Struggle of the Heroes (1962), My Wife, the Director General (1966), A Taste of Fear (1969) and I Want a Solution (1975). He also co-produced a short film named Death Song (1973) starring Faten Hamama.

Acting in the theater, Zulfikar’s debut was in 1964’s A Bullet in the Heart based on Tawfik El Hakim’s novel with the same name, then he starred in over twenty plays in Cairo theatres including Robabikia (1967) alongside Taheyya Kariokka and Nabila Ebeid, A Batchelor and three Maidens (1972), Three Cards Hotel (1974) co-starred by Samir Ghanem and George Sidhom, One Wife is Enough (1979), Possible? Not Possible (1985) alongside Huda Sultan and his final play was The Earthquake (1990) based on Mustafa Mahmoud’s book with the same name.

Salah Zulfikar produced five films and starred in ten, two of which as an actor and a producer with a total of thirteen films listed in the greatest 100 films in the centenary of Egyptian cinema. Zulfikar played all kind of roles in an impressive career spanning over thirty seven years.[10]
