List of wars between Russia and Ukraine
This is a list of armed conflicts between Ukrainian states or national movements on the one hand, and Russian states on the other, from the time of Kievan Rus' to the present.

Kievan Rus'
- Sack of Kiev (1169) is a significant episode in war between the original Kievan Rus' principalities and a coalition under the rule of Vladimir-Suzdal prince Andrey Bogolyubsky. It is considered by many historians as the first war between Ukrainians and Muscovites and the loss of a sense of ethnic and state unity with the Rus' among the population of eastern Rus' (modern Russia).[1][2][3] Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky didn't consider Kyiv as the capital any more. He captured Kyiv and gave the city for three days of looting and plundering to his soldiers. Andrey Bogolyubsky returned to Vladimir-Suzdal after.[4]
Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Ruthenia
- Lithuanian–Muscovite War (1487–1494) was the first war between Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Ruthenia and Grand Duchy of Moscow for Kievan inheritance.[5]
- Lithuanian–Muscovite War (1512-1522) was the fourth war between Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Ruthenia and Grand Duchy of Moscow for Kievan inheritance.[5]
- Battle of Orsha 1514 is celebrated by Ukrainians as big win (lost 500 troopers under the command of Ukrainian nobleman Konstanty Ostrogski vs 13,000-40,000 dead and wounded Muscovites, at least 5,000 captured) in long history of Ukrainian-Russian conflicts.[6][7]
Zaporozhian Cossacks
- Polish–Muscovite War (1609–1618) was a conflict fought between the Tsardom of Russia and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth together with Zaporozhian Cossacks.[8]
- Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny, Hetman of Ukrainian Zaporozhian Cossacks with his Cossacks army arranged the siege of Moscow during Sahaidachny's March on Moscow in 1618.[9]
Cossack Hetmanate
- The Muscovite-Ukrainian War (1658–1659) was a war between the Cossack state of Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi and the Tsardom of Muscovy, which sent troops of Princes Aleksey Trubetskoy and Grigory Romodanovsky to Ukraine.[10]
- The Muscovite–Ukrainian War of 1660–1663 was the war of Yurii Khmelnytskyi during the Muscovite-Polish War (1654–1667) against the Tsardom of Muscovy.[12]
- The surrender of the Muscovite army of Voivode Vasily Sheremetev on October 23, 1660, after the Battle of Chudnov. Refusal of the voivode on behalf of the tsar from Ukraine.

- The Muscovite-Ukrainian War (1674–1676) was the war of Hetman Petro Doroshenko against Moscow state.[14]

Ukraine as part of the Russian Empire
- Suppression of the Haidamak uprising – Koliivshchyna in 1768.[16]

- Kyiv Cossacks insurrection during the Crimean War in 1855.[18]
Ukrainian People's Republic
- Soviet–Ukrainian War in 1917–1922[19]
- 1919 Soviet invasion of Ukraine was a major offensive of the Soviet troops of the Ukrainian Front against the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic.
- Local supporters of Ukrainian People's Republic created anti-Russian and anti-Bolshevik rebellion states on occupied territories like Independent Medvyn Republic[20] and Kholodny Yar Republic.[21] They keep fighting with Russians and collaborators until 1923.[22]
- First Winter Campaign was a campaign by the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) against Russian Bolshevik forces December 6, 1919 – May 6, 1920.
- Second Winter Campaign was a failed military campaign by the Ukrainian National Army in October and November 1921 against the Russian Bolsheviks.
Ukrainian Insurgent Army
- Ukrainian Insurgent Army war against Russian occupation was a war of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army against Soviet Union during and after Second World War.
Ukraine
- 2003 Tuzla Island conflict was a territorial dispute over the ownership of the Tuzla Island between Ukraine and Russia in October 2003.
- Russo-Ukrainian War (since 2014) is the military intervention of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, which for 8 years existed as a proxy-war between two breakaway states, before culminating in a full invasion.
