Rosemary (poet)

Rosemary is a Malayalam language poet and translator from Kerala, India. She received many awards including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions 2019. Her autobiography, Nilaavil Oru Panineerchampa was published in 2021.

Biography

Rosemary, born Maria Goretti,[2] was born on June 22, 1956, in Kanjirappally, Kottayam district to Dr. K.C. Chacko (Pappachan) and Rosamma.[3] She herself changed her name to Rosemary because of the difficulty of calling.[4] She was educated at Gracie Memorial School, Parathode, St. Dominic's College, Kanjirapally, Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, Chidambaram Annamalai University and Thiruvananthapuram Press Club.[3] Rosemary holds a master's degree in English literature and a diploma in journalism.[5] She worked in the editorial department of the Mathrubhumi daily and as a television correspondent for India Today (Malayalam).[3]

Rosemary declares herself to be a feminist.[6]

Literary career

Rose Mary's first poetry collection, Vakkukal Chekkerunnidam was published in 1996. Although she declares herself to be a feminist, she says she is not a feminist in her writings.[6] Poet Madhavikutty had described Rosemary as her successor.[7] She has been a member of several committees such as the Sahitya Akademi Advisory Board and the Central Board of Film Certification.[5] She lives in Thiruvananthapuram now.[7]

Awards and honors

She received several awards including Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions 2019, SBT Poetry Award, Muthukulam Parvathy Amma Award and Lalithambika Antharjanam Young Writer Award.[3][9] In 2012, she received 4th Esenin Award by Esenin Museum, Moscow, the Foundation Russkiy Mir and Russian Cultural Centre, Thiruvananthapuram for introducing many Russian works to Malayalam language.[3][10]
