Corporate history

The Thonwarenfabrik Laufen, before being renamed to Laufen. Undated photograph by Eugène Cattin (1866-1947).

The Swiss ceramics company Laufen (de) was founded in 1892 in the town with the same name. At first, it produced roof tiles and bricks. In 1925, it was the first Swiss company to make ceramic products like toilets, bidets and bathroom sinks.

In 1967, Laufen bought two factories in Austria, located in Wilhelmsburg and Gmunden. In the 1990s, an aggressive international expansion followed, with two factories built in the Czech Republic and one in Bulgaria. In six years, 18 companies were acquired, but in end of the 1990s, Laufen was in serious financial troubles. In 1999, the owner family sold Laufen to the Spanish Roca conglomerate.

Jihočeská keramika, or JIKA, a Czech manufacturer of bathroom ceramics founded in 1878, was bought in 1991 by Laufen. In 1995, Keramické závody Znojmo, followed.

In 2006, Roca purchased the Indian sanitary ware company Parryware, and in 2015 the Johnson Pedder brand was launched, targeting the Indian middle class.[1][2][3][4][5]

A recent study from a UK online bathroom retailer showed that Roca was its most popular seller of vanity units between 2018 and 2022.
