Reedsy (organisation)

Reedsy is a website for authors of self-published works[1] who wish to recruit freelance publishing professionals.[2][3] The website aims to simplify and improve accessibility to the self-publishing process.[4] The website’s online marketplace allows self-publishing writers to procure proofreading, cover illustration and marketing services for book projects.[1][3]

History

Emmanuel Nataf, CEO, founded the organisation in 2014 [2] with Matt Cobb, Vincent Durand, and Ricardo Fayet.[3] Cobb is the lead designer, and Durand and Fayet work as the chief technical officer and chief operating officer respectively.[5] The founders claim that the name ‘Reedsy’ refers to papyrus reeds.[5]

Nataf had no prior publishing experience when he started Reedsy. However, when Seedcamp agreed to fund Reedsy, Nataf relocated from France to London.[5]

In September 2014, Fayet claimed the organisation had invited editors from the Editors' Association of Canada and the Editorial Freelancers Association to join their website.[5] By May 2015, three hundred freelancers and three thousand authors had registered.[2] Nataf claimed in February 2017 that the Reedsy website approved one per cent of applications from creative freelancers.[4] Nataf later clarified that the organisation received three hundred applications per week, of which approximately five were accepted. [6] Simultaneously, he stated that freelancers worked on several hundred book projects each month through the website.[6]
