History
The company was founded in 2017 in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas by entrepreneurs Brandon Friedman and Terrence Kamauf, two friends who had served in combat together in Afghanistan and Iraq. Citing a desire to help communities recover from the trauma of war, they launched Rakkasan Tea as a way to help artisan farmers in post-conflict countries reach U.S. tea drinkers. The approach distinguishes Rakkasan Tea from most other U.S. tea companies that import premium tea from China, India and Japan.[5] The company has grown steadily since. It was named one of "5 social impact startups to watch in North Texas" by the Dallas Business Journal in 2019,[6] before adding a storefront to its existing e-commerce sales in 2021.[7] In 2022, Rakkasan Tea was "nominated for the 'Best Innovative Marketing Campaign' of 2021 at the World Tea Conference and Expo, alongside companies like Harney & Sons and The Republic of Tea."[8]
