Rail transport in Bhutan

There is no rail transport in Bhutan.

However, Bhutan and India have signed a memorandum of understanding to connect Bhutan with the Indian Railways network.[1] On January 25, 2005, the King of Bhutan and Indian Prime Minister agreed to carry out a feasibility study for rail links.

Possible routes are[2]

1) Hasimara–Phuentsholing via Pasakha (18 km). This line has the first priority to be constructed due to high passenger and goods transportation.[3]

2) Kokrajhar–Gelephu (70 km)

3) Pathsala–Naglam (40 km)

4) Rangla–Darranga–Samdrupjongkar (60 km) and

5) Banarhat–Samtse (18 km).[4]

The railways in Bhutan will be built in 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge.
