Přeštice

Přeštice (Czech pronunciation: [ˈpr̝̊ɛʃcɪtsɛ]; German: Prestitz) is a town in Plzeň-South District in the Plzeň Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 7,000 inhabitants. It lies on the Úhlava River, some 20 km (12 mi) to the south from the region capital of Plzeň.

History

The first written mention of Přeštice is from 1226. In 1770–1775, the Baroque Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built, designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer.[2]

Until 1918, Prestitz – Přeštice (previously Przestitz or Prestic)[3] was part of the Austrian monarchy (Austria side after the compromise of 1867), in the district of the same name, one of the 94 Bezirkshauptmannschaften in Bohemia.[4]

After the end of World War II, exactly 1,795 Torah scrolls were discovered stockpiled within an abandoned synagogue in the town. Today most of these scrolls are under the protection of museums and preservation societies, though a few have been donated to synagogues internationally.
