Pratik Gandhi

Pratik Gandhi is an Indian actor. He primarily works in Gujarati theatre and cinema.[1] He garnered national attention and widespread critical acclaim for playing stockbroker Harshad Mehta in the 2020 Sony LIV biographical drama web series Scam 1992. In 2021, Gandhi made his Bollywood lead debut with Bhavai.[2]

Early life

Gandhi was born in Surat to parents who were teachers. He completed his schooling at V. D. Desai Wadiwala (Bhulka Bhavan) High School in Surat. He studied at Surat where he was involved in theatre arts.[3] He graduated in Industrial Engineering from Pune University and started working as an engineer in Reliance Industries in the daytime and doing theatre in the evenings. He worked with National Productivity Council in Satara, Pune and later worked for a multinational corporation in Mumbai.[4]

Career

Gandhi received an opportunity to work in the Gujarati play Aa Paar Ke Pele Paar with Firoz Bhagat, Apara Mehta, and Vipra Rawal which was soon to open. The play was commercially successful. He landed a role performing with another stalwart of Gujarati theatre, Manoj Shah. He received a role in the Gujarati film Bey Yaar (2014) which became commercially and critically successful.[4] He continued to work in theatre with several hit plays like Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon, Hu Chandrakant Bakshi and Ame Badha Sathe To Duniya Laiye Mathe, in which he played multiple roles. He was included in the Limca Book of Records with his play Mohan's Masala; he performed a monologue in three languages, English, Hindi and Gujarati on the same day. He played a lead role in his next film, Wrong Side Raju (2016), which became commercially and critically successful. The film went on to win the National Award for Best Gujarati Film.[5]

He garnered national attention and widespread critical acclaim for playing stockbroker Harshad Mehta in the 2020 Sony LIV biographical drama web series Scam 1992. The success of the series is also said to have spawned the desire to gain financial literacy in India.[6][7][8][9][10] In 2021, he played the lead in the Gujarati drama web series Vitthal Teedi. He was praised for his performance and the show received positive reviews.[11]

Gandhi was praised for his performance in the 2021 Hindi film Bhavai. It was his first Hindi film as a lead. The film received mixed reviews.[12][13][14] His upcoming Hindi film Atithi Bhooto Bhava is in post-production.[15] He started filming Dedh Bigha Zameen, written and directed by Pulkit.[16]

Personal life

Gandhi's parents are teachers. He married television and theatre actress Bhamini Oza in 2009. Miraya, their daughter, was born in 2014. His younger brother Punit Gandhi is a designer by profession but sang "Athadaya Kare Che" for the film Love Ni Bhavai.[17][18][19]
