Early life and career

Jüni was born just outside of Bern, Switzerland.[2] He graduated from Bern University and was a Research Fellow at University of Bristol in the Department of Social Medicine before returning to Bern, where he founded the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) in 2007 and became Director of the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine in 2013.[2][3]

He moved to Toronto in 2017, where he joined St Michael's Hospital and was appointed professor at the University of Toronto.[2] Jüni is the director of the Applied Health Research Centre (AHRC) at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute and the Canada Research Chair in Clinical Epidemiology of Chronic Diseases.[4][5]

COVID-19

Since July 2020, he has been the scientific director of the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table (OST) to advise the government during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario.[4] He also sits on the OST's Drugs & Biologics Clinical Practice Guidelines Working Group.[6]

Some of his recommendations include better protections and paid sick days for the front-line workers who are disproportionately impacted by the disease.[7] He has at times been critical of the Ontario provincial government's response to the pandemic and has stated that "the government continues to ignore the advice of experts".[7]

In March 2022, Juni announced that he would resign from the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table and will assume a position at the University of Oxford in July.[1]

Research

Jüni has published over 300 scientific papers in the fields of cardiology and epidemiology, for which he has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Thomson Reuters.[8] He is an investigator for a study to evaluate favipiravir for potential chemoprophylaxis against COVID-19 in long-term care facilities, sponsored by Appili Therapeutics.[5][9]
