Paappan

Paappan is an upcoming Indian Malayalam-language crime thriller film directed by Joshiy.[1] The film stars Suresh Gopi in the title role along with, Gokul Suresh, Nyla Usha, Neeta Pillai, Asha Sharath and Kaniha in supporting roles. Produced jointly by David Kachappilly and Raaffi Mathirra, the film features original score and soundtrack composed and produced by Jakes Bejoy.

Premise

The film tells the story of Abraham Mathew Mathan / Paappan, a voluntarily retired S.P. from the Crime Branch who is unwillingly reinstated to the force for investigating a long-standing murder case.

Development

On 14 February 2021, Suresh Gopi announced that he will be teaming up with director Joshiy for his 252nd[2] venture. Writer RJ Shaan, cinematographer Ajay David Kachappilly and composer Jakes Bejoy were also reported to be part of the film.[3] The official title Paappan was announced with a poster on the following day.

Casting

Nyla Usha was reported to play the female lead. Sunny Wayne, Neeta Pillai, Gokul Suresh, Kaniha and Asha Sharath were also signed to be part of the film.[1] The film marks the first time on-screen collaboration of Suresh Gopi and son Gokul Suresh.[4] The cast additions included Chandhunadh, Vijayaraghavan, Tini Tom and Shammi Thilakan.[5] Jewel Mary was reported to make a cameo appearance in the film.[6] Actress Dayyana Hameed confirmed her inclusion in the film, stating that she will play the role of a contemporary dancer.[7]

Filming

Principal photography began on 5 March 2021 in Kanjirappally.[8] The same day, Gopi shared an image of his character with a salt and pepper look.[4] According to the writer, it is a family-oriented film.[5] Kaniha, who earlier worked with Joshiy and Suresh Gopi in Christian Brothers (2011), plays the latter's pair in the film.[9] On 10 March 2021, Gopi was hospitalized after being infected with pneumonia while shooting.[10] On his discharge, he was asked to contest as the NDA candidate in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election from Thrissur and began campaigning.[11] He rejoined the sets of the film post elections.[12]
