Nicole Becker

Nicole "Nicki" Becker (Buenos Aires)[1] is a climate activist from Argentina and one of founder from Jóvenes por el Clima which is part of Fridays for Future's movement.[2] Becker became youth champion for Escazu Agreement and also Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) champion on 2021.

Background and education

Becker is a daughter from a father who is a criminal lawyer and mother who is math teacher and lives in Cabalito.[3] After realizing about the climate change, Becker change her course in college from psychology to international law on her first year of college.[4] She is currently studying law at University of Buenos Aires.[5]

Activism

Since she was 8 years old, she already joined Habonim Dror and also part of Ni una menos.[6] Her enviromental activism start on February 2019 when she saw an Instagram a video of young people doing climate march in Europe and Greta Thunberg became the center of the topic. Cause of the first International March for the Climate Crisis will be held on March 15, 2019, Becker, Bruno Rodriguez and their other three friend decided to found Jóvenes por el Clima which is part of Youth Climate on the end of February 2019. After the founding of the organization, they decide to arrange the march on Argentina which joined by 5,000 people. The organisation has been pushing the Argentina to do Climate and Ecological Emergency Declaration.[7] The government finally do the declaration on 17 July 2019.[8] In 2019, she received a grant to attend the UN Climate Conference in Madrid on behalf of the Argentine youth.As part of UnaSolaGeneración campaign on World Children's Day by UNICEF and America Solidaria to promote climate change to youth around Latin America and the Caribbean during COVID-19 pandemic, Becker became one of the representative[9] In 2019, Becker come to 2019 United Nations Climate Change Conference under the grant as youth representative for Argentina.[10] Later, she return to 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference and meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.[11]

Honour

On 10 March 2020, the Chamber of Deputies honored her a special distinction cause of her contribution on social action by giving her a diploma and medal with 21 other women.[12]The Access Initiative (TAI), the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (UN ECLAC) and the Government of Costa Rica has been selected Becker as one of the fiveyouth champions, succeeding David R. Boyd on the second anniversary of Escazu Agreement.[13] as UNICEF Youth Advocates in 2020.[14] In 2021 she was chosen as "Young Champion of the program" by the SWA.[15]

Career

Beckerbecame a host in FutuRöck radio program titled "Permitido pisar el pasto" with Rodriguez .[16] She is also columnist for Eldario.[17]
