Music of the Spheres World Tour
The Music of the Spheres World Tour is the ongoing eighth concert tour being undertaken by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was announced on 14 October 2021, in support of their ninth studio album Music of the Spheres, which marked the band's return after the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] They had not toured for the promotion of their previous album, Everyday Life (2019), as it was decided to pause touring until they could work out how to ensure that it would be environmentally friendly.

This vision will be realised in the Music of the Spheres World Tour: alongside the announcement, the band released a detailed plan setting out how they could have a minimal impact on the environment, resulting in 50% less carbon dioxide generated in relation to the A Head Full of Dreams Tour. The plan was developed for over two years by Coldplay and a number of leading environmental experts, and features a number of innovative sustainability strategies. For example, the band have joined forces with BMW to create the first "mobile, rechargeable show battery" to power each concert on the tour, and have announced that the tour's stage will be built from "a combination of lightweight, low-carbon and re-usable materials (including bamboo and recycled steel) that can be properly reused or recycled at the end of the tour". They have also pledged to plant one tree for every ticket sold.[2]
The tour features extensive pyrotechnic and confetti visuals, similar to Mylo Xyloto Tour and the A Head Full of Dreams Tour, including the use of third generation of Xylobands as well. However, according to Coldplay's sustainability plan, these features are adapted in a way their inclusion in each show will be more considerate towards the environment: the band have stated they have been investing in "a new generation of sustainable pyrotechnics that have less explosive charge and new formulas that greatly reduce or eliminate harmful chemicals", "confetti used during the show will be 100% biodegradable and will require significantly less compressed gas for ignition than on previous tours", and the "LED wristbands will be made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials".[3] The first leg will be visiting the Americas and Europe, starting in Costa Rica's Estadio Nacional on 18 March 2022.[4]
Reception
Sales for the European leg were opened on 22 October 2021, the band sold over one million tickets throughout the day in the region according to Billboard.[5] Due to the high demand, Coldplay announced a fifth and sixth date at Wembley Stadium.[6] On 26 October 2021, more extra concerts were made available at King Baudouin Stadium and Stade de France, with Fnac reporting that the band sold over 200,000 tickets in record time on the latter venue.[7] General sales for Argentina opened on 9 December 2021, with the group adding three extra dates at Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti and selling another 200,000 tickets in less than seven hours.[8] During the next day it was confirmed that all dates for the country were officially sold out.[9] On 13 December 2021, Punto Ticket, the company responsible for sales and distribution in Chile, reported the Music of the Spheres World Tour had already sold over two million tickets across the world.[10] Their headlining performance at Rock in Rio went sold out in 27 minutes, the fastest sale ever for a group.[11]
Impact
According to University of Nottingham's Impact magazine, Coldplay are "redefining the rulebook" for eco-friendly touring, as their concert run "put environmental issues and climate change at the helm of international music news".[12] Live Nation's director of global sustainability Lucy August-Perna commented that the band's ideas helped to further build on the framework the company had been developing over the past five years on their tours and venues.[13] She also mentioned they are "working with Coldplay to adopt their plans and help standardize what they learn and best practices to provide sustainable touring options" for the artists that approach Live Nation about creating greener tours.[13] Vogue Scandinavia noted the Music of the Spheres World Tour "sets the bar for how every artist, and fans, can contribute to reducing their CO2 emissions" as the band's "transparency on the reality that no tour will be carbon negative in 2022, while also putting their very best efforts into creating the most sustainable show on the market, speaks louder than words".[14]
