Background
Location and date
On 31 August 2021, the Miss Grand International organization publicize the promoted media on their social platforms citing that the grand final of the 9th Miss Grand International will take place in Phuket, Thailand, on 4 December 2021, while the ancillary events will be commenced prior, including; the national costume parade, the swimwear competition, and the preliminary round. All such events are set to launch after the registration date, which is scheduled for 17 November.[1][2][3] However, the COVID-19 pandemic in Phuket caused all convention centers and theaters in the province, which once had the potential to host the important event, to be abandoned, and suffered a facility shortage.[7][8] As a result, the organizer inevitably decided to reschedule most of the main events except the swimming suit competition, to be held in Bangkok instead.
Later on 6 October 2021, the organization additionally detailed the schedule of the preliminary activities on the island of Phuket as well as the main event in Bangkok;[9] however, some ancillary activities was cancelled due to the opposing political views between the organizer and the pro-military government local community; which caused the application for property use was revoked.[10][11][12] The local government also declined to facilitate the event arrangement in the province.[10][11][12][13]
Selection of participants
Delegates representing 59 countries and territories were selected to compete in the pageant . However, some national pageants were postponed or canceled entirely due to the COVID-19 pandemic such as Brazil, Indonesia, Nepal, and Thailand, or lacking the financial support to hold the national contest, resulting in multiple former winners or runners-up from other national pageants being appointed for the 2021 edition or casting processes being held instead. Of the appointed contestants, four contestants were designated, notwithstanding the national contest was being held by the country franchise owners, namely; Barbora Aglerová of Czech Republic, has been crowned Miss Czech Republic Grand 2020, was expected to represent the Czech Republic at the Miss Grand International 2020,[14][15] but was forced to withdraw after suffering from a knee injury and Crohn's disease.[15][16] Aglerová was then appointed to instead participate in this 2021 edition by Taťána Makarenko, the president of Miss Czech Republic Organization. The second one was the representative of Cuba, despite having been elected national queen in 2020, Geysel Vaillant did not compete in the preceding edition of Miss Grand International because she was diagnosed with Covid-19 positive.[17] Vaillant was later named "Miss Grand Cuba 2021" after Vicar Abel, the director of Miss Beauty International Academy, took over the franchise. As well as the contestant from Peru, Samantha Batallanos was also assigned to take part in this edition after she was forced to resign the title of Miss Peru Grand 2020 by the president of the said national contest, Jessica Newton, prior to entering the international contest,[18][19] citing not well-prepared for the pageant.[19] In addition to the countries previously mentioned, El Salvador's franchise owner, Francisco Cortez, chose Iris Guerra to represent the country in this year's competition,[20][21] even the national pageant – Certamen Nacional de la Belleza El de Salvador 2021 (CNB Elsalvador 2021), was being held normally.[22] Guerra was the first runner-up of the CNB Elsalvador 2020 and the winner of an international contest Reinado Internacional del Café 2020.[21]
Other delegates were appointed to their national titles, including the representative of Bolivia,[23][24] Brazil,[25] Costa Rica,[26] Guatemala,[27] Indonesia,[28][29] Netherlands,[30] Pakistan,[31] Panama,[32] Sweden,[33] Venezuela,[34] and Vietnam.[35] The remainder of the delegates were selected after winning their respective national pageants, obtaining the runner-up, or receiving a designated supplementary title at a national pageant.
Liberia made a debut in this 2021 edition,[36] Guadeloupe rejoined the contest after being absent in the preceding edition. In addition, Pakistan, which has not participated since 2015, also returned to the competition.[37]
