Early life and career
Salzman was raised in Pensacola, Florida. After graduating high school in 1995, she joined the Army "when she was 17 to escape an abusive home.[6][1] Her father was an alcoholic and her mother had become addicted to opioids when she was in middle school." She served as part of the NATO forces in Bosnia. She got married in the Army, but separated after they had two children. She returned to Pensacola where she became a dancer at a gentleman's club to support her family, and eventually was able to buy a residence. She also went back to school to get her Associate of Applied Science degree from Pensacola State College[7]
Salzman earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of West Florida.[2]
Volunteering and politics
Salzman was active in the Escambia County Countil of PTAs where she served as a volunteer and president. She also worked as an education chair for Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson's transition team.[7]
In 2022 HB103, or so called 'constitutional carry' (also known as permitless carry), was introduced by House Rep. Anthony Sabatini of Florida's 7th congressional district. The bill would allow persons in Florida—without a felony criminal record—to carry a handgun openly or concealed. On February 18, 2022 it was reported by Jim McCool in The Floridian that Rep. Salzman felt, "...[Republican leadership] will not bring up [HB 103] for a vote since that very leadership is the one that pushed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Safety Act (gun control bill passed in 2018 by Republicans) after the Parkland shooting." McCool continued in his reporting to comment that Sabatini was seemingly in the minority regarding his support for Floridians second amendment gun rights, and that Salzman was, according to Sabatini, one of several in Republican leadership labeled under the epithet, RINO.[8] On March 3rd, 2022, the Florida constitutional carry bill was endorsed by sitting Governor Ron DeSantis, when reporter Jake Stofan was asked if this meant that it would likely receive a committee hearing now that the bill has received DeSantis's explicit support, Stofan said, "...the sponsor of the constitutional carry bill, Sabatini, seems to believe that the endorsement by the Governor means his [Sabatini's] legislation will be put on the fast track, but when speaking with opponents of constitutional carry [such as Michelle Salzman], well they don't really seem all that concerned..."[9]
