Meghan Gallacher

Meghan Gallacher (born 1992) is a Scottish politician who has been a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for the Central Scotland region since 2021 and a councillor for the Motherwell West ward since 2017. A member of the Scottish Conservatives, she served as the party's group leader in the North Lanarkshire Council.

Early life and education

Gallacher was brought up in Holytown in North Lanarkshire. She is a graduate of the University of the West of Scotland where she studied politics.[2][3]

Political career

Gallacher first stood for election in 2015 at Thorniewood ward by-election for North Lanarkshire Council, she was eliminated at Stage 5 of the count.[4] The following year, she stood for the Motherwell and Wishaw constituency at the 2016 Scottish Parliament election, finishing in third place. She was also the fifth placed Conservative candidate for the Central region, but was not elected.[5][6]

Gallacher was elected to North Lanarkshire Council for the Motherwell West ward in 2017, she subsequently became the party's group leader.[7]

At the 2017 and snap 2019 UK general elections, she stood for the Motherwell and Wishaw constituency, finishing third on both occasions.[8][9]

She was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 2021 for the Central Scotland region, elected through the regional list vote. She had also stood for the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse constituency.[10][11]

On 12 January 2022, Gallacher called for Boris Johnson to resign as Conservative party leader and Prime Minister over the Westminster lockdown parties controversy along with a majority of Scottish Conservative MSPs.[12]
