In 2007, a group of people from the space and aviation industries founded a non-profit tax-exempt organization to establish an air and space museum. The Massachusetts Air and Space Museum, Hanscom Field was initially proposed for Bedford, Massachusetts. The targeted location was at Hanscom Field[2][3] at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hangar that was previously the site of two different flight laboratories.[4] At the time of its conception, Massachusetts and Vermont were the only two New England states without an aviation museum. The purpose of the museum is to educate its visitors on the role that the people of the state have played in aviation and air space industries. According to Bill Deane of Melrose, president of the Massachusetts Aviation Historical Society, the first jet engine was developed and the first rocket was designed in Massachusetts.[4] The museum is a member of the Massachusetts History Alliance.[5]

It has been funded through grants and public and corporate donations.[2][3] The museum's activities are overseen by a five-member board of directors.[6] It opened in Hyannis in February 2020.[7]
