Marylou Sudders

Marylou Sudders is an American government official, who has been serving as Secretary of Health and Human Services of Massachusetts since January 8, 2015.[2]

Career

On November 21, 2014, it was announced that Sudders would be appointed Secretary of Health and Human Services of Massachusetts, when Charlie Baker takes office,[3] succeeding John Polanowicz.[4] She previously served as Massachusetts Commissioner of Mental Health, President & CEO of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and New Hampshire's Deputy Director and Acting Director of the Division of Mental Health and Developmental Services.[5]

Sudders was a full time faculty member at the Boston College School of Social Work from 2012 until she became Secretary. She remains a visiting professor at the school.[5]

Personal life

She was born Mary Louise Sudders to the late Harry Ellsworth Sudders, an electrical engineer in Ballstone Lake, NY and the late Lillian Beaumont Sudders of Goshen, New York. On August 31, 2003, at the age of 49, she married Bradley Frederick Richardson at his family’s home on Drakes Island in Wells, Maine.[6]

Sudders holds a bachelor’s degree with honors and a master’s degree in social work from Boston University, and honorary doctorates from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology and Bridgewater State University.[7][8]
