Maria Floro

Professor Maria Floro (born Maria Sagrario Lim Floro, 30 April 1955) is a Professor Emerita of Economics at American University in Washington, D.C. She served, for the most part, as co-Director of the Program on Gender analysis in Economics (PGAE) since it was established in 2008.

Her publications include co-authored books on Informal Credit Markets and the New institutional economics, Women's Work in the World Economy, and Gender, Development, and Globalization: Economics as if All People Mattered and articles on gender and development strategies, care and unpaid work, time use and well-being, environment and ecological crises, vulnerability, food security and migration, poverty, household savings, credit and urban informal sector. She served as chair of the Advisory Board of the Economic and Social Costs of Violence Against Women and Girls Project based at National University of Ireland and is Advisory Board member of the Women's Empowerment: Data for Gender Equality (WEDGE) Project based at University of Maryland. Professor Floro recently led the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Open Society Foundations-supported Care Work and the Economy (CWE-GAM) Project involving 40 scholars around the world. She is Special Adviser of the Care Economy Africa Adaptation Project and part of the Care Economies in Context Project. She served as Board Member and Vice President for Development of International Association for Feminist Economics.[1][2]

Early years and genealogy

Maria Sagrario Lim Floro was born on 30 April 1955 in a neighborhood of Calvario, Meycauayan. She was the second of five children of Vicente Carreon Floro (January 12, 1917-February 12, 1987) and slain, Teodora Lim Floro (April 1, 1922-August 5, 1993), with sole sibling Fortunata Lim (October 15, 1917-March 5, 2003). Her parents are Venancio Lim (April 1, 1887-May 15, 1956) and Marciana Lim (May 24, 1898-May 16, 1951).

Vicente Carreon Floro worked as a Mechanical engineer of the Development Bank of the Philippines at Gil Puyat Avenue corner Makati Avenue . On February 12, 1987, he died of lingering illness due to Candidiasis.

On November 22, 1953 Vicente Carreon Floro was appointed Baptism godparent or "Ninong" of Florentino Floro who was baptized at Meycauayan Church "Florentino Jose Floro, Jr." by Fr. Cenon Bernabe, the 1955-1962 Parish Priest of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish Church (Pulong Buhangin).

Teodora and her sister Fortunata were high school teachers of Meycauayan College. Their parents owned the lot of the Academy but was later sold to the College. In 1966, Teodora Lim Floro successfully defended her Master's Thesis "The boy-girl relation problems of adolescence: Its implications to the proposed guidance program of St. Mary's Academy (Meycauayan) Correlation study". She earned her Master of Education or M.A. Major in Guidance and Counseling at De La Salle University under Andrew Gonzalez . She also authored "A case study of Danilo Cruz - a senior of St. Mary's Academy Meycauayan, Bulacan". She was appointed Guidance and Counselor of St. Mary's College of Meycauayan.

In 1963, a 700 square meter lot (part of the 52 lots owned by Vicente and Teodora, now Maryville Subdivision) along MacArthur Highway and Saluysoy-Calvario Road was acquired by St. Mary's College at Saluysoy, Meycauayan with the Torrens title granted by Vicente Carreon Floro and the Right of Way by Engr. Mariano Lucero.

The living siblings of Maria Floro include accountant Michaelma Lim Floro (October 19, 1953) maried to Clem Lim, with children Michael (November 7, 1983) and Noel (September 10); mathematician Winifreda Floro (October 20, 1956) married to Domeng; Civil engineer Francisco "Ike" Floro (June 16, 1958, who recently suffered a mild stroke) married to Emy (December 16, 1961) with sister Gigi (November 24, 1964) and children Dra. Din Din (March 4, 1988) , Francis (August 13, 1989), JB (November 7, 1992) and KatKat (November 4, 1996 ); the youngest sister of Maria Floro is Maria Venicia "BingBing" (January 12, 1960 ), maried to JingJing.

The paternal grandparents of Maria Sagrario Lim Floro are Ladislao Floro (October 17, 1947, age 72) who was a land owner, jeweler, Jueteng operator and professional Monte manager; his only sister is Teresa Floro (February 1, 1974, age 89). Ladislao "Islaw Koto" married Flaviana Carreon (April 16, 1936, age 57).

Ladislao and Flaviana's children include the eldest Francisco Javier Carreon Floro (June 8, 1927, age 26) and Raymundo Floro (August 29, 1931, age 23), both UP Diliman alumni Doctor of Medicine at Vienna; Florentino Carreon Floro, Sr. (March 19, 1904-June 2, 1983) "Dikong Tino" married to Milagros Geronimo Velasquez (December 5, 1925-December 5, 1995), with parents Maria Geronimo and Lazaro Velasquez and children Jose, Jesus and Vicente; Simeon Carreon Floro (February 22, 1908-August 27, 1991 ) or "Sangko" married to Angelina de Castro Floro (March 20, 1915-October 24, 2001), with children Angelina de Castro Gonzalez and Tomaneck (February 1), with children Roberto Floro Gonzalez and Larissa Floro Tomaneck (September 18), Dr. Simeon de Castro Floro (November 6), Dra. Renita de Castro Tecson Floro (April 25, 1945) married to Atty. Tecson with children, Rowena (December 11, 1971), Ronnie (April 19) and Ryan (May 12); and Dra. Teresita de Castro Santa Rosa and Ducut (December 16, 1950) with child Grace Floro Santa Rosa; and Sor Martha del Sagrario Carreon Floro (November 2, 1920-January 23, 2008). The nickname "Agreng" from "Sagrario" of Maria Floro was derived from Sor Martha, her aunt, a Poor Clares nun at Real Monasterio de Santa Clara de Manila at Katipunan Avenue and Calbayog.

Education

Maria Sagrario Floro graduated in St. Mary's Academy of Meycauayan (former site circa 1960-1965, where Maria Floro, cousin Florentino Floro and the latter's classmate Menardo Guevarra played, prayed and studied). Maria Sagrario Floro finished her high school at Saint Theresa's College of Quezon City, in 1972.

Maria Sagrario Lim Floro graduated magna cum laude in University of the Philippines Diliman with a BS in Business Economics in 1976 after she also studied in University of the Philippines Los Baños College of Economics and Management (B.A.).

After four years, she studied in Stanford University via fellowship (Ph.D.) in Food Research. In 1988, she became Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics in the American University. In 1996, the University President granted her tenure

Maria Floro also studied at Monash University (M.A.).

Personal life

Maria Sagrario Lim Floro is married to Steve with a daughter Maria (who wrote that, “despite hurtling challenges, my mother believed in my potential, even when I did not believe in myself”).

During vacation, Maria Sagrario would enjoy playing daily with her cousin Christine Floro Abad Temblique (October 25, 1953) only daughter of Marciana Floro (July 12, died at age 99) and Benigno Legaspi Abad (the Confirmation godparent of Florentino Floro ) of Barangays Zamora and Saluysoy, Meycauayan. Christine is a distinguished Toastmasters (a past International Director of the organization 2001 - 2003) and President of MC Display & Metalcraft Corp.

At their 1,100 square metre Ladislao-Florentino-Vicente Floro [[w:en: Ancestral_houses_of_the_Philippines|Ancestral House] (inherited by sibling Maria Venecia Lim Floro but later sold to present owner businessman Mr. Dindo Capiral) at Calvario-Saluysoy, Meycauayan, Maria Sagrario Floro played daily from 1960-1965, with her 5 cousins, sons of Florentino Carreon Floro, Sr. & Milagros Geronimo Velasquez: eldest Angel of Death Florentino Floro (November 5, 1953); second is Joselito (March 15, 1956), with partner Wilma Tiquia (October 9, 1971) and daughters Jenny (March 26, 1953) and Patrice Tiquia Floro (August 31, 1995); third is Mechanical engineer, Gold- Jewellery trader and philanthropist Benjamin Floro (March 26, 1959) married to Teresita Lacson David Floro (April 1, 1955) with adopted daughter Elaine Ann David Floro (August 26, 1985); fourth is Gold trader Jesie (June 3, 1960) married to Cynthia Sinson Floro (July 26, 1993) with children Christian (June 12, 1992) at The Bronx (Macroeconomic and Geopolitical Research) and Jan Raphael (July 26, 1993), Assistant Vice President - Technology Audit - Global Corporate & Investment Bank and Markets; and youngest Robert Velasquez Floro (January 26, 1966), a gifted child guided by unseen duendes LUIS, Armand and Angel.

Teodora Lim Floro's only sibling Fortunata "Etang" Lim suffered permanent psychiatric disorder due to traumatic memories. Teodora and her parent Venancio Lim (who were shortchanged when they were forced to sell the Meycauayan College lot to the College's owners. The proceeds of the sale, however, was invested in building their Sampaloc apartments, Greenhills and Pasig houses for rent. From 1980 until her death on March 5, 2003, Fortunata stayed at the Venancio-Marciana Lim Ancestral House in Calavario.

After the death of Vicente Floro on February 12, 1987, Teodora Lim Floro, during school vacations, became a loving "Yaya" to baby Maria (of Steve and Maria Sagrario Floro) in Washington, D.C. Siblings Michaelma, Winifreda and Maria Venecia, however, migrated to Australia. Franciso Lim Floro, however, did not stay with her mother, Teodora Lim Floro (who lived and was left alone in the Saluysoy-Calvario Ladislao-Florentino Floro, Sr. Ancestral House). Franciso built a modest family house at Teodora Lim Floro's half hectare Malhacan lot (500 square meters of which was sold to the present San Isidro-San Roque Parish Church (Malhacan, Meycauayan City, Bulacan)).

On June 16, 1992 Baptismal godparent Teodora Lim Floro wrote a letter to godson Florentino Floro warning the latter against praying for the misfortunes, accidents and deaths of enemies, considering the jobless judge due to pretend world's reverberating claims being the "angel of death" and able to cause pain and sickness hauntinv the Philippines .

Teodora Lim Floro inherited the 5-karat pink diamond (which bears a mystic curse. It was formerly owned by nun Sor Martha del Sagrario Floro (which was bestowed to her by Florentino Carreon Floro, Sr., who in turn inherited it from by Flaviana Carreon Floro). Teodora Lim Floro kept the same at the Floro’s Mosler Safe.

At 3:00 p.m. of August 5, 1993, Francisco Lim Floro and spouses cousin Benjamin and Teresita Floro witnessed the lifeless cadaver of Teodora Lim Floro bathing in blood at their Ancestral house due to multiple stab wounds in her chest. Until this date, the horrible murder remains unsolved. Her 13 days wake culminated in a solemn Requiem Mass at Meycauayan Church and burial at Meycauayan, Bulacan Cemetery.

On All Saints' Day of November, 2019 ( COVID-19 pandemic in 2019), Maria Sagrario Floro visited the graves of Teodora Lim Floro, Vicente Floro, Florentino Carreon Floro, Sr. and Milagros Floro. Maria Sagrario Lim Floro joined her cousins Robert Velasquez Floro with Jesie Floro & Cynthia Sinson and her only brother Francisco Lim Floro with wife wife Emy, sibling Gigi and the 4 children at the Meycauayan, Bulacan Cemetery.

Awards

Maria Sagrario Lim Floro is recipient of American University's 2018 university prize for Outstanding Research.

Maria Floro, as Class 1972 alumni of Saint Theresa's College of Quezon City, was a recipient of Theresians-turned-Iskolar ng Bayan received the Teresa Awards for 2022 in Gender and Development Economics during the Saint Theresa’s College Quezon City (STCQC) Alumni Homecoming on January 29, 2022.
