MV Island Kwigwis
The M/V Island Kwigwis is the fifth vessel in the Island Class Ferry series, owned and operated by BC Ferries. Built by Damen Shipyards in 2021, this vessel is part of the second phase of Island Class vessels. The Kwigwis was launched as Island 5on February 22, 2021, and spent from August 4 and September 28, making the transatlantic crossing under its own power from Galați, Romania, to Victoria, British Columbia.[1] On December 14, 2021, Island 5 was christened and renamed Island Kwigwis by Chief Bill Cranmer of the Namgis First Nation, BC Ferries Planning and Business Advisor Linda Provost, and BC Ferries president and CEO Mark Collins. Kwigwis means "eagle of the sea" in the Kwakwaka'wakw indigenous language.[2]
Service History
Island Kwigwis entered service with her sister ship Island Gwawis on April 12, 2022, replacing the Quinsam on the Nanaimo - Gabriola Island route. The vessel overnights at the Descanso Bay Ferry Terminal.
