Venues and Competition Format
It has been announced that MPL Indonesia Season 9 will adhere to the same rules and regulations as the previous season. MPL Indonesia Season 9 will feature the same eight teams as MPL Indonesia Season 8 following the league's transition to a franchise-based model system.[3]
This will be the first MPL Indonesia tournament before the COVID-19 pandemic to feature an offline setting (LAN Event) in the middle of the season. This would eventually lead to the event having an audience, the first season having an audience before the pandemic.[4]
Regular Season
The regular season of MPL Indonesia Season 9 began on February 18, 2022.[5] The regular season followed a double round-robin format with each teams playing against their opponents twice, for a total of 14 games being played per team. This format is also being adhere by MPL Philippines but with a different pointing system. Aggregated points will be tallied per team based on the following:[6]
- If the match is decided by a 2-0 score, the winning team will earn 2 aggregated points while the losing team earns -2 points.
- If the match is decided by a 2-1 score, the winning team will earn 1 aggregated points while the losing team earns -1 points.
The top two qualifying teams of the regular season will be seeded an outright qualification on the upper-bracket semifinals while the remaining four teams will qualify for the play-in tournament.[6]

Controversies
The play executed by AE's PAI appeared to have a problem seen in live during the second game of the first day of the playoffs between EVOS Legends and Alter Ego Esports. Despite trying to get acknowledgement for the issue, it was only then that PAI was picked off and the technical pause was called due to the lag.[8] Fans believed that Alter Ego's PAI's pick off and lack of recognition from the staff caused them to lose the match and the series. MPL Indonesia stated that they will "investigate the lagging incident" and will provide additional information as soon as possible.[9]
