List of features removed in Windows 11

Windows 11 is a major release of the Windows NT operating system and the successor of Windows 10. Several features that originated in earlier versions of Windows and that were included in versions up to Windows 10 are no longer present in Windows 11. Following is a list of these.

No Longer Bundled Apps

The following apps are no longer bundled with Windows 11:

Windows shell

The following parts of the Windows shell have been removed:

In addition:

  • The touch keyboard no longer docks in screens larger than 18 inches.[1]
  • Windows no longer synchronizes desktop wallpapers across devices with a Microsoft account.[1]
  • Folder previews for images or videos contained in that folder in thumbnail view/large/extra large icon views are removed. The generic folder icon is now shown for any folder containing images or videos.[7]

Start menu

Some functionality from the Start menu was removed and replaced with other features.

  • Folders and groups[1]
  • Live tiles (the Widgets app provides portions of what the live tiles of Windows 10's bundled apps once provided).[1]
  • Recent and pinned files on pinned apps

Taskbar

The following taskbar features have been removed:

  • Support for bringing an app into focus by dragging a file to its button[8]
  • Support for moving the taskbar to the top, left, or right of the screen[8]
  • Support for changing the size of the taskbar or its icons.
  • Windows are always combined into groups with labels hidden.
  • The option to hide or customize individual system tray icons (Only third-party icons can be hidden or shown)
  • All settings and shortcuts in the taskbar's context menu have been removed and replaced by a shortcut to the Taskbar settings area of the Settings app.[8]
    • Many of the options were not moved to the Taskbar settings
    • Task Manager can still be launched using: Ctrl+Alt+Del, Start > Run > Taskmgr.exe, or Ctrl + Shift + Esc
  • The network and audio flyouts have been consolidated into a new settings flyout.
  • "Some icons in the System Tray", although Microsoft doesn't specify which[1]
  • Support for third-party taskbar components (deskbands)[1]
  • The upward swipe gesture for jumplists
  • The People button has been succeeded by the "Chat" button powered by Microsoft Teams.
  • News and Interests has been succeeded by the "Widgets" panel.
  • Action Center has been removed and replaced with two separate flyouts: "Notification Center" and "Quick Settings"
  • Ability to move the system tray from the primary monitor [9]
  • Hovering over the Show Desktop button to peek at the desktop.[10]

Settings

  • File History can only be configured using the legacy control panel which does not support adding custom folders to the set of protected folders, as the Settings app in Windows 10 did.[11]

Architecture

Windows 11 only runs on the x64 or ARM64 CPU architectures,[1] e.g. no longer runs on 32-bit x86 CPUs and devices which use BIOS firmware, although certain workarounds exist that can be used to install it on devices with legacy BIOS firmware.

NTVDM, a system component exclusive to 32-bit versions of the Windows NT family and removed in all 64-bit versions of Windows, is no longer shipped with Windows 11.
