Animal Kingdom is an American drama television series developed by Jonathan Lisco, based on the 2010 Australian film by David Michôd. The series follows a 17-year-old boy (Finn Cole), who, after the death of his mother, moves in with the Codys, a criminal family clan governed by matriarch Janine "Smurf" Cody (Ellen Barkin). Animal Kingdom debuted on TNT on June 14, 2016.
On July 6, 2016, the series was renewed for a second season of thirteen episodes.[1] On July 27, 2017, TNT renewed the series for a third season.[2] On July 2, 2018, TNT renewed the series for a fourth season.[3] On July 24, 2019, TNT renewed the series for a fifth season.[4] On January 14, 2021, ahead of the fifth season premiere, TNT renewed the series for a sixth and final season.[5] The fifth season premiered on July 11, 2021.[6]
As of October 3, 2021, 62 episodes of Animal Kingdom have aired, concluding the fifth season.

| Baz finds out from his wife, Catherine, that the security guard was actually a moonlighting cop and had died from his injuries. | Returning from Mexico, Craig attempts to smuggle drugs across the Mexico-US border. | Flashbacks from Smurf's childhood depict a man named Isaiah, a former boyfriend of Smurf's mother, Miriam. Following a botched robbery in which Miriam was shot, Isaiah drove away, leaving her to die. In the present, Smurf leaves town to visit Isaiah at the auto body shop he works at; Isaiah does not recognize her. Smurf initially intends to kill Isaiah, but when he suddenly reminisces on old memories about Miriam, she decides not to go through with the plan. Baz implores Paul to help them with the upcoming heist, and Pope’s old prison buddy, Vin, wants in on the job. Catherine grows worried about Pope. Deran tries to make up with Adrian. | The Codys finish off the military base heist with Paul. Pope, Baz, Craig and Deran enter the base ostensibly to play paintball, but sneak off. Following Baz’s plan, they switch a portion of the stored cash with fake bills, and stash what they have stolen in waste barrels to be transported off base. Meanwhile, J agrees to talk to Detective Yates, but is hesitant to implicate the rest of the family. Catherine steals money from a suspicious Smurf. Concluding that Catherine is talking to the cops, Smurf sends Pope to confront her. Pope visits Catherine and notices her packed bags. | Pope and Smurf try to keep Baz from figuring out the truth about Catherine. Baz is convinced Vin has something to do with Catherine’s disappearance, and he nearly beats Vin to death before Pope stops him. The money from the Camp Pendleton heist comes through, and Craig and Deran collect the money from the waste barrels, which are being transported in the back of a truck. Paul asks for a larger cut of the money, but is denied by Smurf. Deciding against implicating his family, J gets Alexa to confess that Yates blackmailed her to sleep with him. J records the confession on his phone, implicating Yates. This results in Yates ending her investigation of the Codys and Alexa getting arrested for the drug charges. Craig, Deran and J get into a turf fight with a Brazilian gang and rob them. After the incident at Lena’s school, Pope gets a visit from Child and Family Services, who want to speak with Lena. Nicky and J’s relationship continues to falter. After the two get into an argument, Nicky gets high on heroin and accidentally shoots herself with a gun. While Deran originally plans to flee the country with Adrian, he decides to remain behind and breaks up with Adrian for Adrian's safety. After being kicked out by Pope, J meets with him and reveals his lies and Smurf's will, offering Pope his help in exchange for them running the family together which Pope accepts. | The Codys circle the wagons as they learn Jed's sons, a group of doomsday preppers, have tracked the truck to Oceanside, a tense standoff leads to an agreement that the gold should be returned in order to put Smurf's vendetta to rest. Periodic flashbacks, now in the early-1980's, depict Smurf leading a transitory lifestyle and using the young Julia & Pope as pickpockets and shoplifters, the flashbacks also show Pope's early issues with violence and unusual behavior as well as Julia's questioning of Smurf's motives. In the present, the truce doesn't hold, the preppers attack the house and all but one, Mike (Nick Stahl), are killed by the Codys, Pope takes him and the bodies out to the hills and forces Mike to dig a grave, struggling with the decision of whether or not to execute him, decides to let him go, refusing to do what Smurf would want. | The aftereffects of Smurf's death begin to weigh on the Codys when they find out that her entire estate, including their home, will be transferred to Pamela in 6 months time. Pope starts to unravel after finding out Angela hasn't reported to her parole officer in weeks and frantically attempts to put Smurf's ashes to rest by himself. In the early-1980's, Smurf has once again joined up with Pam, who advises her to make serious plans for the future and give up her reckless ways, at a party Smurf gets into a heated confrontation with a drug dealer before being removed by Pam. In the present, J looks into ways to keep the family business afloat, convincing Frankie to give him access to a fence (in exchange for a 5% fee on every transaction for herself), he is also approached by Pete Trujillo, who provides him with a lead for a job; the location of a crashed cargo plane filled with drugs & money. Deran finds himself reflecting on his regrets for not leaving the country with Adrian and ends up burning clothes and pictures of them in a rage; in addition, Adrian's DEA handler, believing that Deran had murdered Adrian, warns that he will be coming after the Codys as a result. In the present, the plane job does not go as planned, no cash is found and the Codys must evade armed pursuers after fleeing with a large amount of cocaine, Deran & Craig storm out of the house after learning J had already made a deal to have Pete move the drugs and had set up his own businesses with money stolen from Smurf. In the present, J finds out that Deran is also trying to shut him out from dealing with Pete and decides to offload the drugs at a loss instead of hiding them at his bowling alley; Deran shows up at Pam's house and receives few answers on the significance of her relationship with Smurf, but Pam does hint at an opportunity for future jobs in exchange for parts of the estate. Pope visits the empty space where Smurf's trailer once was and makes his way back to the house, where he angrily recounts J's shooting of Smurf, lamenting it as something that shouldn't have happened. Deran is visited by Adrian's former DEA handler who presses him to make a deal, suggesting that Adrian will eventually get bored, return from Southeast Asia and be arrested otherwise. | |||||||

Pam brings her family to meet with the rest of the Codys at the house, providing them with vague information on a job she needs done, after J threatens to contest Smurf's will in court, Phoenix, Pam's son, reveals that the job is meant to retrieve evidence of his involvement in an accidental death that is being used to blackmail both Pam & himself, the Codys are given an ultimatum - accept the job or move out by the end of the week. In the early-1980's, Smurf successfully pulls off an elaborate scheme to get an Oceanside police officer on her payroll for use in future jobs. In the present, Craig accompanies Frankie to her meeting with the fence to offload some of Smurf's jewelry, learning that she has lost business contacts and is in debt since they last crossed paths. Deran & J scope out the job, where they will be taking a safe from the office of a skateboard company that is busy round-the-clock, they are initially apprehensive but accept the job after Phoenix agrees to help. Later on at the house, Pope storms in and begins packing before breaking down, confiding in Deran about his ongoing blackouts and hallucinations, Deran agrees the best decision would be for him to leave town for a while. J and Deran have a tense exchange after he is informed of Pope's departure and Deran's plan to move back into the house in his absence. | |||||||

| As the Codys move forward on the safe job, Pope drives erratically through the mountains, and after nearly committing suicide behind the wheel, finds himself at a roadside commune where he meets a mysterious woman named Cassandra who convinces him to ingest a drink laced with drugs. In the early-1980's, things seem to be panning out well for Smurf and the crew until Jake is severely beaten in front of Pope & Julia by a man named Max Cross, an Oceanside underworld figure who considers their recent jobs an infringement on his territory, Smurf later meets with him and begrudgingly accepts to pay 30% of the take on future jobs in exchange for him keeping away from the family. In the present, the safe job goes horribly awry, none of the information Phoenix provided turns out to be correct and Deran furiously refuses to walk away from the job after they are found out, J & Deran narrowly escape out a window with the safe while Renn, who was brought in to act as a distraction, is forced to stab someone in order to get away after her cover is blown. Craig and J confront Deran after the job, both in disbelief of his recklessness & blind trust in Pam upholding her end of the deal, he relents and they come to an agreement to hold onto the safe until Pam formally signs the house over to them. At the commune, other members react negatively to Pope's presence in their hallucinatory states and he leaves with Cassandra, both drive into the desert where they lay down on an empty road, Pope is questioned about the "darkness" the other members saw in him and if she should be afraid, he states a lot of people are afraid of him but she should not be, both wander further off into the desert in a stupor. | |||||||

| While the rest of the Codys give Deran a wide berth following the safe job, Pope continues to travel with Cassandra, finding out she is a divorcee who has lost custody of her son after witnessing a confrontation between her and her ex-husband, J meets with Lark, Pam's granddaughter and lawyer, who signs the house back over to the Codys. Renn fights with Craig after finding out he wanted her nowhere near the job and, out of spite, attempts to buy coke from her supplier, after he refuses to do business with her she ends up beating another local dealer and stealing his stash. In the early-1980's, Smurf delivers Max his cut from a recent job and strikes up a relationship with the young Billy (Deran's father), Pope & Julia are left home alone and by the time Smurf returns Pam is waiting with them, she states that despite her and Smurf's disagreements, she will always be there for her when needed. In the present, Craig hosts a wild party at the house in celebration of its return, throwing all of Deran's belongings into the pool and later jumping off of the pier, Deran deals with his struggling bar, finding out the downturn is due to rumors surrounding Adrian's extended absence, most people believing that the Codys had him murdered. J meets with Pete to collect the payout for the drugs from the plane job and finds out he was approached by the same DEA agent that was handling Adrian, Pete tells J the only information the agent was looking for was on Deran and that the drugs have been disposed of. | |||||||

| Pope makes a drastic decision to gain Cassandra's forgiveness, kidnapping her son to return him to her and leaving her ex-husband in the desert. | The Codys recover from the fight by attending a local skate competition where Deran runs into the owner of a new bar in town that has been contributing to his lack of business, Craig fights with Renn over her continued dealing, causing her to leave with their son, J approaches Lark for a lead on an attorney who can help them simplify the money laundering process that Smurf set up with their properties. In the early-1980's, Manny fails to show up for a job after he is beaten over mounting gambling debts and Smurf strikes up a partnership after paying off his loan shark, Pete Trujillo Sr. and the young Pete. In the present, Pope settles back into the house by ridding his room of anything reminding him of Smurf, J's new contact in the Oceanside police gives him access to files regarding the Codys, though none of them state how much information the DEA might have on Deran, Deran learns that Adrian's sister has been sending him money and advises her to stop before everyone is brought down. With Renn gone, Craig puts his focus onto helping Deran with the bar, bribing a local food vendor to come to Deran's instead, leading the rival bar owner to confront the Codys and wind up on the losing end of a fight with Craig & Deran. | |||||||

In the early-1980's, Smurf runs afoul of Max Cross once again, refusing to kick up the proceeds from a successful hijacking of a truckload of VCRs that occurred outside his territory, he approaches Pope & Julia and threatens to take them away from Smurf if she doesn't pay what's owed, Smurf learns of this and assures both of them that he will never bother them again. In the present, Pope tries to get rid of the truck he used during the kidnapping of Cassandra's son but finds no help after learning Pete has forbidden anyone from dealing with the Codys, he shows up at Pete's shop, and while Pete is not there, threatens his crew should they come after the family. Officer Chadwick, J's contact in the Oceanside police, sets up a meeting with the Codys to discuss options for dealing with the DEA, they meet at Deran's bar and are surprised to see Livingood arrive with the officer, in the midst of a tirade where he vows to destroy the family using every resource he can, Livingood is shot dead by Chadwick, who assures the shocked Codys that the killing will not be traced to them, but he expects to be well compensated for his services in the future. | |||||||

| The Codys scramble to deal with the mess left behind from Livingood's death, J and Pope take it upon themselves to deal with the body, paying smugglers to take it over the border and stage his death as a cartel hit while Deran and Craig meet with Frankie to discuss scoping out a job. In the early-1980's, Smurf's attempt to lure Max into a trap through a local contact (Baz's mother, a stripper at the club he frequents) is unsuccessful and she is violently confronted, Pope saves her by stabbing Max in the leg and witnesses her kill Max with his own gun. | The Codys begin preparing to move on the port, with it shaping up to be as difficult as expected when Deran and J are unable to come up with a clear plan of action after scoping it out. Craig continues to spiral downward as his drug abuse worsens, leading both Frankie and Pope to confront him over his reckless behavior and the potential risk it will pose on the job. In the early-1980's, the crew decides to rob the safe at Max's bar and make off with cash, guns and a sizeable list of his underworld contacts which, much to Jake and Manny's chagrin, Smurf plans to use to build her own network. In the present, Pope confronts the mechanic that refused to help get rid of his truck and finds out that Pete is moving the coke from the plane job, despite telling the Codys it was disposed of, FBI agents show up at the bar and question Deran about his association with Livingood but don't seem to suspect his involvement, J and Pope meet with Chadwick and decide to cut ties after calling his bluff when he threatens to use Livingood's murder against them. | In the early-1980s, Smurf begins making plans to move into what will one day become the Cody family home and reveals that she is pregnant. In the present, the Codys rob the port, but they are discovered and are forced to flee both the man that they are robbing and the police; however, the heist is successful. After getting her cut of the money, Frankie leaves the country while Ren, continuing to ignore Craig and living with her cousins, attempts to send a friend to collect both her and Nick's things only to have Craig refuse. Enraged at Pete's lies about the cocaine, Pope confronts him with J and rips one of Pete's eyes out as a punishment for his actions, threatening to do worse if he doesn't give them their cut within a week. The Codys share a family dinner where J and Deran, finally working together as the leaders of the family, outline their plan to sell off Smurf's apartment buildings and buy a series of businesses to launder their money through like J's bowling alley and to everyone's surprise, Deran decides to start laundering money through his bar which had previously been just his legitimate side business. As they celebrate, the police discover Catherine's body buried at a new housing development. | |||||||
