Born in Framingham, Massachusetts to Command Sergeant Major Laurence E. Holden (1935-1982) and his wife, Friederike (nee Hofer). Holden was of Austrian, Irish and Scottish descent. Holden's father was born and raised in the Irvington neighborhood of Southwest Baltimore, Maryland. Holden and his family moved often due to his father's various Army reassignments. Holden's father was assigned for several years to the Panama Canal Zone. They relocated for the last time to his father's native Maryland. Holden spent his teenage years in Glen Burnie, Maryland. He graduated from Fort Meade High School in 1979.

Holden began his career with a bit part in 1988's "Hairspray" which was filmed in his father's hometown of Baltimore. In 1991, Holden won a TV role in "The Arc". He appeared in many character roles on TV including episodes of Cracker and Charmed. Holden graduated to film and began collaborating with director Christopher Nolan in Memento and continued with Insomnia and Batman Begins. Holden was known for his role as "Darren Henson" on CSI.[1] He semi-retired as an actor to become an independent filmmaker, writing and directing eight films. His first film, My Father's House, won the 2002 Independent Achievement Award at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival. One of his closest friends, actress Cameron Diaz made a cameo in the film for free.

Throughout Holden's career, Larry was often mistaken as a relative of actor, William Holden (1918-1981). However, William Holden's birth name was actually William F. Beedle, Jr. Holden was only William's stage name.

In 2010, Holden was diagnosed with cancer; he died on February 13, 2011[3] at the age of 49.
