Plot

The plot tracks Carla, a 14-year old pregnant girl placed in a centre for teenage mothers where she hangs out with other teen classmates (Raki, Estel, Claudia, Jamila and Sheila).[1][2] She also has to deal with the vicissitudes of her fraught relation with her mother Penélope.[2][3]

Production

The screenplay was penned by Pilar Palomero.[4] La maternal (the second feature directed by Palomero after Schoolgirls)[5] is an Inicia Films and Bteam Prods production, with the participation of RTVE, TVC, Televisión de Aragón, and Movistar+ and support from Creative Europe's MEDIA, ICAA and ICEC.[3][6] Julián Elizalde worked as cinematographer.[7][8]

Shooting took place in late 2021 and lasted for 8 weeks.[9] Shooting locations included Los Monegros and Barcelona and its surroundings.[6]

Release

Distributed by BTeam Pictures,[1] the film is set for a 18 November 2022 theatrical release in Spain.[10] Elle Driver acquired rights for worldwide sales outside Spain and France.[1]
