In September 2019, Universal Pictures announced its plans to distribute two then-untitled independently-financed thriller films written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan.[3] In July 2021, Old was released as the first film in that partnership.[4] In press interviews for Old, Shyamalan revealed that he was working on adapting a novel he had optioned,[5] and told Wired that he was halfway done with the first draft, specifying that he was on page 54 and working on a scene where "something really bad is about to happen."[6] According to Shyamalan, the film's screenplay was the fastest he had ever written in his career.[7] In August, Shyamalan shared a picture of an unlabeled binder containing a script with the caption, "The next one. On third draft. Super tight. Under a 100 pages."[8] In October, the film's title was revealed to be Knock at the Cabin.[9] In December, Shyamalan's representatives denounced rumors that the film would be shot in one take.[10]
In December 2021, Dave Bautista joined the cast.[11][12] Shyamalan cited Bautista's performance in Blade Runner 2049 as the main reason he wanted the actor in his film: "There's a type of stillness where you're not doing nothing; you're doing everything and you're still. Your essence of what you're thinking is coming off your body. And Dave was embodying all of this philosophy in that scene ... I didn't know who he was at that time, and he stuck in my head. So when this script came ... I asked Dave."[13] In early 2022, Rupert Grint, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Ben Aldridge, and Jonathan Groff were added to the cast.[14][15] Insiders told Bloody Disgusting that the film would be similar to the 2018 novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul G. Tremblay.[16] Principal photography began on April 19, 2022, in Burlington County, New Jersey.[2][17]
